The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the official name of Jakarta's main Catholic church, widely known as Jakarta Cathedral. Its full name in Indonesian is Gereja Santa Maria Diangkat ke Surga, which literally translates to "The Church of Saint Mary, Taken Up into Heaven." This cathedral is not only an important spiritual center but also one of the most recognizable architectural landmarks in the capital of Indonesia.

The current cathedral building, consecrated in 1901, is a magnificent example of the Neo-Gothic style, reminiscent of classic European churches. The cathedral is built in the shape of a cross, and its facade is decorated with three openwork cast-iron spires. Two high towers reach 60 meters in height, symbolizing the protection and purity of the Virgin Mary, while a third 45-meter spire crowns the central part of the building. Inside, you can see impressive arched ceilings, an antique organ, a 19th-century main altar made in the Netherlands, and beautiful stained glass windows.
The cathedral's location holds special symbolic meaning: it stands directly opposite Istiqlal, the largest mosque in Southeast Asia. This proximity serves as a vivid example of interreligious harmony and tolerance in the country. Besides its religious function, the cathedral also attracts tourists, and its second floor houses a small museum dedicated to the history of Catholicism in Indonesia.
