How to get to Chabahar

Chabahar is a unique port city on the coast of the Gulf of Oman, renowned as the only oceanic harbour in Iran. When planning a trip to Chabahar, tourists discover amazing "Martian" landscapes and a free trade zone with a mild climate. This remote corner can be reached in various ways, but due to its geographical location, travellers most often choose air travel or a long journey by car.

The fastest and most comfortable way to reach the coast is to take a flight to the local Chabahar Airport (ZBR). This aviation hub serves over 220,000 passengers annually and has regular connections with major cities in the country, making it the main aerial gateway to the region.

Although geographically the airports of Gwadar (170 km) and Turbat (253 km) are close to the city, they are located in neighbouring Pakistan. Using these airports for a trip to Iran is not practical due to the necessity of crossing state borders and complex logistics.

There is currently no direct railway connection to the city of Chabahar, as the country's rail network has not yet been extended to this stretch of the coast. The nearest operating train stations are located at a significant distance, in major administrative centres within the country.

Tourists who prefer trains usually have to travel to cities such as Zahedan or Bandar Abbas (railway hubs within Iran), and then transfer to an intercity bus or taxi. Using the railway infrastructure of neighbouring countries, such as Pakistan, for tourism purposes is not recommended due to border formalities.

Bus services remain one of the most popular ways to get to the city of Chabahar, despite the lack of detailed data on specific schedules in the public domain. Comfortable VIP-class buses run regularly from major Iranian cities, offering a budget-friendly alternative to flights.

A bus journey allows you to enjoy the changing landscapes, however, one should be prepared for a long travel time due to the vast distances between settlements in this part of Iran. Tickets are usually purchased locally at bus terminal ticket counters.

Travelling by car to Chabahar is suitable for experienced drivers ready for long drives through desert terrain. The main driving routes lead from the provincial administrative centre (Zahedan) or along the coast from Bandar Abbas. The roads generally have quality surfacing but require increased attention.

It is important to note that routes through neighbouring states (for example, via Gwadar or Muscat) are not suitable for ordinary tourists due to visa complexities, border crossings, and the immense distances involved in driving around the gulfs. For comfortable movement within the region, it is recommended to rent a car with a driver or use official taxi services.

1. Clothing and Dress Code. Iran requires adherence to the Islamic dress code: women need a headscarf (rousari) and a long tunic, while men should wear trousers (shorts are not permitted). Choose light, natural fabrics due to the heat.
2. Transport. Public transport is poorly developed. To get around the city and its surroundings, it is most convenient to use taxis or local ride-hailing apps (such as Snapp).
3. Finances. International Visa and Mastercard cards do not work here. Bring cash (US Dollars or Euros) to exchange for local Rials at official exchange offices.
4. Health. Drink only bottled water. The sun here is very strong, so sunscreen and a head covering are mandatory even in winter.
5. Language. The main language is Persian (Farsi). English is not understood everywhere, so download an offline translator or learn basic phrases.
6. Etiquette. It is customary to remove shoes when entering a home or a mosque. Avoid public displays of affection between men and women.
7. What to Avoid. The import and consumption of alcohol are strictly prohibited by law. Also, do not photograph government and military facilities.
8. Locations. Be sure to visit the Lipar Pink Lake and the Martian Mountains — they can only be reached by car, so plan your transfer in advance.
