How to get to Odate

How to get there: Introduction

When planning a journey to Japan, it is worth paying attention to Odate — a charming city in Akita Prefecture, surrounded by picturesque mountains and known as the historic homeland of the Akita Inu dog breed. Figuring out how to get to Odate is quite simple: a developed transport network allows you to travel here comfortably by plane, train, bus, or car.

By Plane

The most convenient way to reach the city is to use Odate-Noshiro Airport (ONJ), which serves this region. Daily flights connect Odate with Tokyo (Haneda Airport), allowing tourists to arrive at their destination in just 70–80 minutes of flight time.

If tickets for direct flights are unavailable, the airports in the neighbouring cities of Aomori (AOJ) and Akita (AXT) are good alternatives. They are located at a distance of about 70–80 kilometres, and from there, one can easily reach the final point of the route by train or shuttle bus.

By Train

Travelling by train is a comfortable and scenic way to get to the city. The main transport hub is Odate Station (JR), served by trains on the Ou Main Line and Hanawa Line.

It is most convenient to plan your route with a transfer through neighbouring Akita or Aomori. Both ordinary local trains and comfortable "Tsugaru" express trains operate between these cities and Odate, allowing you to quickly cover the remainder of the journey.

The city has no major railway stations. Nearest cities with rail connections:

By Bus

Intercity buses are a cost-effective and comfortable way to reach Odate. Travellers from Tokyo can use the Jupiter night express, which departs from Ikebukuro Station. The journey lasts all night, allowing you to save on hotel accommodation and arrive in the city early in the morning, ready for sightseeing.

For those travelling from other parts of the Tohoku region, the Michinoku express bus is a convenient option. It connects Odate with a major transport hub — the city of Morioka. The travel time is just over two hours, and the route passes through the picturesque landscapes of Akita Prefecture.

Additionally, there is a regular connection with the nearest airport, Odate-Noshiro. Limousine buses operate according to the flight arrival and departure schedule, transporting passengers to the city centre and major hotels.

By Car

Travelling by car is an excellent way to explore the northern Tohoku region at your own pace, enjoying views of the mountains and forests. The drive from Aomori will take about 1 hour and 20 minutes, as the distance is only 75 kilometres, while the road from Akita will require a little more time — about two hours to cover 100 kilometres. Those heading from the Pacific Ocean side, from the city of Misawa, will have to drive approximately 110 kilometres, which usually takes two hours.

It is worth noting that intercity taxi services in Japan are expensive: a transfer can cost 30,000 yen or more, so most travellers prefer to rent a car. The quality of the road surface in this part of the country is impeccable, and navigation on expressways is intuitive and comfortable for drivers.

Tips for Travellers

Preparing for a trip to Odate requires attention to detail to ensure your journey is as comfortable and hassle-free as possible. We have compiled a list of practical recommendations to help you feel confident in this cosy city in Akita Prefecture.

  1. Seasonal clothing. The city is located in the north of the country, so winters here are snowy and quite cold — be sure to bring warm, waterproof footwear with non-slip soles and a high-quality down jacket. Summers can be hot and humid, so light clothing made of natural fabrics is suitable, while the principle of layering is ideal for the changeable weather of spring and autumn.
  2. Getting around the city. Public transport within the city may run with long intervals, especially in the evening. For comfortable sightseeing, it is most convenient to rent a car or use taxis. The city centre is quite compact, and many places can be explored on foot.
  3. Financial matters. The local currency is the Japanese Yen (JPY). Although major hotels and supermarkets accept cards, Odate is a provincial city, and small restaurants or souvenir shops often only accept cash. We recommend always carrying a supply of banknotes and coins.
  4. Health and safety. Japan is distinguished by a high level of safety, and it is peaceful to walk the streets here even after dark. Tap water is clean and suitable for drinking. If you need medicines, look for signs with the character 薬 or the inscription "Drugstore", but note that product names will be in Japanese.
  5. Language barrier. Away from the capital, the level of English proficiency among locals may be limited. We strongly recommend downloading an offline translator with a photo translation function to your smartphone in advance — this will significantly simplify reading menus and navigation.
  6. Local etiquette. Locals highly value politeness. When entering traditional establishments, temples, or private homes, be sure to remove your shoes. It is customary to greet people with a slight bow, and loud conversations in public places and on transport are considered bad manners.
  7. What to avoid. Never leave tips in restaurants or taxis. In Japanese culture, this is not customary and may be perceived as an insult or an attempt at charity. Payment is made strictly according to the bill, often at the cashier upon exit.
  8. Gastronomic advice. While in Odate, do not miss the opportunity to try "Kiritanpo" — the region's main dish. These are sticks of boiled rice, grilled over charcoal, which are often served in a soup with chicken and vegetables. This is not just food, but part of the city's cultural heritage.

Following these simple rules will help you show respect for local traditions and avoid awkward situations. May your acquaintance with the homeland of the famous Akita Inu dogs leave only the warmest and most pleasant memories!
