The maritime portion of the museum is a true journey through time, where you can learn everything about shipbuilding, navigation, and even the secrets of ancient piracy. Exhibits tell stories of famous naval battles of 1692 and how the sea has shaped the daily lives of islanders for centuries. An interactive format makes this an especially appealing destination for families.

The crown jewel of the complex is the Occupation Tapestry Gallery. This is a striking artistic project consisting of 13 panels created by the hands of residents from every parish on the island. Using millions of stitches and hundreds of shades of wool, artisans captured scenes of local life based on eyewitness accounts. This project has become a symbol of community unity and creative energy.

What to Do

At the Maritime Museum, an interactive immersion into the elements awaits: here, you don't just look at exhibits, you literally feel the rhythm of the sea. Explore detailed models of historic ships, learn how the tides work around the island's shores, and listen to recordings of old sea shanties. For adventure seekers, there are sections on corsairs and pirate raids that were once a reality in these waters.

Moving to the Tapestry Gallery, you will find yourself before massive canvases where each panel is equipped with an interactive screen. By touching the display, you can see rare archival photographs, videos, and hear the personal stories of the people whose lives inspired the tapestry’s scenes. This turns viewing a static piece of art into a dynamic multimedia adventure.

Be sure to watch the documentary film about how this grand project was created. The museum is great for children, with educational elements that introduce navigation and nature in a playful way. Finally, stop by the gift shop to take home a piece of the island's maritime history as a keepsake.

Getting There

Reaching the museum is easy, as it is conveniently located on New North Quay, right next to the historic harbor and Liberation Square. If you are staying in the center of St Helier, the walk to the building takes just 10–15 minutes. The path from the ferry terminal is even shorter—about a 5–10 minute leisurely stroll.

For those who prefer public transport, LibertyBus network buses are an excellent option. The nearest stops are St Helier Harbour or New North Quay. If you are arriving from Jersey Airport, take bus No. 9 or No. 15; the journey takes about 20–30 minutes. A taxi ride from the airport will be faster—roughly 10–15 minutes.

If you are traveling by car, there are paid parking zones located near the marina and harbor. However, it’s worth noting that finding a spot can be difficult during peak hours, so a walk along the waterfront remains the most pleasant and reliable way to reach the museum.

History & Facts

The building housing the exhibition is a historical monument in its own right. Five connected warehouses were built in 1889 as part of a major port development. For a long time, they served the needs of customs and harbor maintenance until they were converted into a modern museum space, opening to the public in 1997.

The history of the Occupation Tapestry is equally fascinating. The idea for this large-scale art project was born in 1988. Over several years, thousands of residents from all 12 of the island's parishes worked together to create the panels. Each of the original 12 panels was hand-woven using 7.5 million stitches. This monumental task was completed by Christmas 1994, and the gallery was officially opened by Prince Charles on May 9, 1995.

Interestingly, the project continued to evolve decades later. In 2015, to mark the 70th anniversary of a significant historical date for the island, a 13th panel was added. All the panels are created using a special "basketweave tent stitch" technique, which gives them a unique texture and depth, allowing them to capture the spirit and daily life of the local community at that time in great detail.

Time Needed

To thoughtfully explore both parts of the complex, most guests need 1.5 to 2.5 hours. If you plan to examine the tapestries in detail and use the interactive screens to study personal stories, you should set aside about 45–60 minutes for the gallery.

The maritime section of the museum, with its ship models and stories of navigation, usually takes about another hour. For history buffs who want to watch the documentary about the making of the tapestry and carefully study all the archival artifacts, we recommend budgeting up to 3 hours for your visit.
