The sculpture is a full-length figure of Viktor Tsoy. He is depicted as Moro, his character from the cult film "The Needle," which was partially filmed right here in Almaty. The monument is installed on Tulebayev Street, at the corner of Kabanbay Batyr Street, a location that has become symbolic for many admirers of the musician's talent.
The author of this expressive work is Matvey Nikolayevich Makushkin, a graduate of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, also known for creating the Tsoy monument in St. Petersburg. A special feature of the Almaty memorial is not only the sculpture itself but also the original design of the surrounding space: metal plates with quotes from Viktor Tsoy's songs are embedded in the pavement tiles. Notably, some of these lines were written by him in Alma-Ata while working on the film "The Needle," which adds a special atmosphere and depth to this place.
