General Weather Overview
The climate in Amboseli can be described as tropical and moderately arid, making it an attractive destination for safaris at any time of the year. Thanks to its location in Kenya near the equator, the temperature regime remains surprisingly stable here. During the day, the air usually warms up to a comfortable +25...+29 °C, and extreme heat happens extremely rarely, allowing tourists to enjoy their time outdoors.
Throughout the year, there is an alternation of dry and wetter periods. According to statistics, the highest number of days with precipitation occurs in April, May, November, and December. This time can be tentatively called the "rainy seasons", although rainfall is often not prolonged. Conversely, the dry season, lasting mainly from June to September and at the beginning of the year, is characterized by a minimal number of rainy days and clear skies.
Particular attention should be paid to daily temperature fluctuations. Despite warm and sunny days, nights in Amboseli can be quite fresh, especially from June to August, when the thermometer drops to +15 °C. Such weather is considered very comfortable, but travellers are recommended to carry a light jacket for morning and evening drives. Overall, the climate here is mild and predictable, without sharp weather anomalies.
Temperature
The climate in Amboseli is distinguished by its mildness and comfort, making the park attractive to visit at any time of year. The hottest period here falls at the beginning of the year: in February and March, the average air temperature is around 23.5°C. In these months, daytime heat can reach 29°C, creating an atmosphere of a true African summer, although extreme heat is rare here.
The nominal "winter" season, which lasts from June to August, brings pleasant freshness. The coolest month is usually July with an average figure of around 20°C. Even during this period, the air warms up to a comfortable 25°C during the day, which is ideal for long safaris, as the sun is not as scorching as at the beginning of the year.
Travellers should take into account the noticeable daily temperature fluctuations characteristic of this region. The difference between the daily maximum and nightly minimum is often about 10 degrees. While you can walk in light clothing during the day, nights and early mornings can be quite brisk: in the cool season, the temperature after dark can drop to 15°C, so a warm sweater for morning drives will be very useful.
Precipitation
Precipitation in Amboseli is distributed unevenly throughout the year, forming distinct wet and dry periods characteristic of the Kenyan climate. The rainiest time is April, when the number of days with precipitation reaches its peak — about 24 days per month. The second surge in humidity is observed at the end of the year: November and December are also distinguished by a high frequency of rains (more than 20 rainy days per month), which corresponds to the season of "short rains".
The driest period falls in the middle of the year, from June to September. At this time, the probability of getting caught in the rain is minimal: for example, in July, only about 5 days with precipitation are recorded, and their volume is negligible. This time is traditionally considered favourable for safaris, as animals more often gather at permanent water sources.
An interesting feature of the Amboseli climate, judging by statistics, is that even in the "wettest" months, the total volume of falling water in millimetres remains low. This suggests that precipitation here is frequent but, as a rule, not too heavy — most likely, these are short-term rains or light drizzle, which are quickly replaced by the sun, refreshing the air and filling the park landscapes with life.
What to Pack
The weather in Amboseli is quite comfortable, but the temperature can change noticeably during the day, so the main principle of your wardrobe should be layering. During the day, the air often warms up to +25...+29°C, and you will be comfortable in light clothing made of natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen. However, early in the morning and in the evening, when the thermometer can drop to +15...+18°C, you will definitely need a warm sweater, fleece jacket, or light coat. For safaris, it is better to choose clothes of neutral colours (khaki, beige, sand) so as not to attract insects and to look harmonious against the background of nature.
If your trip falls during the wetter months, such as April, May, November, or December, it is worth preparing for frequent precipitation. A light waterproof raincoat or windbreaker will not take up much space in your luggage but will become indispensable helpers. Footwear should be as comfortable and closed as possible: durable trainers or light trekking boots are ideal for trips and walks, protecting your feet not only from moisture but also from dust and prickly plants.
Do not forget about protection from the active equatorial sun: a wide-brimmed hat or cap, high-quality sunglasses, and cream with a high protection factor (SPF) are mandatory items on a trip to Kenya. We also strongly recommend taking an effective insect repellent and a small backpack for water and personal items during excursions. In the dry season (from June to October), the sun can be especially bright and the air dusty, so a light scarf or bandana may also prove to be useful accessories.
