How to get to Samburu

When planning a trip to Samburu, you are setting off for one of the most colourful and wild regions in the centre of the country. This district of Kenya is renowned for its reserves, the unique "Big Five" animals, and the authentic culture of the local tribes. You can get here in various ways: from a quick flight on a small aircraft to an exciting journey by SUV across the African plains.

The fastest way to reach the heart of the savannah is by air. The region is served by Samburu Airport (UAS), which accepts domestic flights, allowing you to save time and start your safari immediately. The airport is well connected to major tourist locations and lodges.

An alternative option is flying to neighbouring major cities. The nearest airport is in Nanyuki, located approximately 134 km away. Flights are also available to Meru (150 km) and the more distant Eldoret (203 km), from where a ground transfer will be required.

There is no direct railway connection to the reserve area, as Samburu does not have its own station. Train enthusiasts should look towards the terminus in the city of Nanyuki, which is approximately 134 km from the destination.

Travelling via Nanyuki is the most logical rail route. Other cities, such as Meru or Eldoret, although mentioned in the transport context of the region, are located further away and are less convenient for train connections.

Regular bus services directly to the lodges in the reserve are not well developed, so travellers often combine different modes of transport. The optimal option is to take an intercity bus to major transport hubs such as Nanyuki or Meru.

From these cities, you can reach the final destination by local minibuses, known as matatus, or by private taxi. This method of travel allows you to immerse yourself in the local atmosphere but requires plenty of time and patience.

A journey by car offers the opportunity to witness the changing landscapes from green foothills to the arid savannah. The most popular and shortest route runs from the city of Nanyuki: the distance is about 135 km, and the travel time will take around 2–3 hours depending on road conditions.

The road from the city of Meru, covering a distance of about 194 km, will require approximately 4 hours of driving. If you are departing from Eldoret, be prepared for a long journey of nearly 490 km, which may take the entire day.

Visiting this unique region requires careful preparation to ensure your journey is comfortable and safe.

1. Clothing and Gear. Choose clothing made from natural fabrics in neutral colours (khaki, sand) to avoid attracting insects or startling animals. Be sure to bring a hat and a warm sweater for morning safaris.
2. Transport. Roads in the reserve can be challenging, so renting a four-wheel drive SUV (4x4) is strongly recommended for getting around.
3. Finances. The official currency is the Kenyan Shilling. In remote lodges, card terminals may not work, so always carry a supply of cash in small denominations.
4. Health. The region is a malaria risk zone; consult a doctor regarding prophylaxis and use repellents. Drink only bottled water.
5. Connectivity and Language. English is widely spoken in the tourism sector. Learning a few words in Swahili, such as "Jambo" (hello), will help you build a rapport with the locals.
6. Etiquette. The Samburu people preserve their traditions. Always ask for permission before photographing people or their homes.
7. Safety. Never leave the camp or lodge area without a guide, especially after dark — wild animals are everywhere.
8. Optics. Do not forget a good pair of binoculars: the landscapes here are open, and they will help you spot rare animals from a great distance.
