Current Weather

Planning a trip to sunny Sikasso? In this section, you will find the most up-to-date weather information and detailed forecasts to help you perfectly plan every day of your journey through Mali.

Overview

Sikasso is a city with a classic sub-equatorial climate, where life follows the rhythm of two distinct seasons. Unlike the more arid northern regions of Mali, lush greenery and fertile lands prevail here, making the city the country's true breadbasket. Travelers can expect consistently hot weather, complemented by either dry heat or the life-giving moisture of tropical downpours.

The year in the region is clearly divided into two periods: the wet rainy season, lasting from May to October, and the dry season from November to April. During rainy spells, the sky is often overcast and the air can become quite stifling, while the dry months offer clear skies, although the heat persists daily. Thanks to this climate, the city's surroundings are filled with orchards growing the country's best mangoes, strawberries, and potatoes.

Temperature

Temperatures in Sikasso are characterized by constant warmth: the thermometer almost never drops to low levels. Throughout the year, average figures fluctuate from a moderate 25°C to 32°C. The hottest period occurs just before the rains start, in March and April, when daytime highs often reach +37...38°C. During this time, the heat is particularly intense due to the dry air.

Despite the lack of a traditional winter, Sikasso has a period with relatively cool nights. In December and January, minimum temperatures can drop to +15...18°C, providing pleasant relief after the daytime heat, which remains around +33°C even during these months. Diurnal temperature fluctuations in the dry season are quite noticeable, so travelers should be prepared for the contrast between the scorching midday sun and the refreshing dusk.

The summer months, coinciding with the rainy season in Mali, bring a slight decrease in daytime highs to +28...30°C. However, due to the high humidity, this weather can feel more oppressive. In the evening, the temperature stabilizes around +27°C, creating a true tropical atmosphere where the warmth persists around the clock.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Sikasso is distributed very unevenly, creating a clear boundary between seasons. From November to April, the city is dominated by the dry season, when rain becomes exceptionally rare. In January and December, the probability of precipitation is almost zero, and humidity levels can drop significantly, resulting in piercingly clear skies.

Nature's true transformation begins in May with the arrival of the first major thunderstorms. The peak of the rainy season falls in July and August. In August, the city receives a record 261 mm of rainfall, and the number of rainy days reaches 27 — meaning it rains almost every day. These are typically powerful tropical downpours that bring temporary coolness but are quickly followed by high humidity.

September also remains a very wet month (about 194 mm of precipitation), and the rains only gradually subside by the end of October. Transitional months, such as April and May, are characterized by rare but intense downpours that signal the change in climatic phases. For travelers, this means that planning a trip in the second half of summer requires reliable waterproof gear.

Packing Tips

When packing for Sikasso, your primary focus should be on natural fabrics. Cotton and linen will be your best allies in the African heat, allowing your skin to breathe. If your trip is planned for the dry season (November–April), be sure to pack a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and lightweight long-sleeved clothing — this is the best protection against intense UV rays. For the cooler evenings of December or January, a light cardigan or windbreaker will come in handy.

For travel between May and October, a quality raincoat or a lightweight waterproof jacket is essential. An umbrella may be less effective against the strong wind gusts that often accompany thunderstorms. It is also important to bring closed-toe shoes resistant to moisture and mud, as well as waterproof cases for electronics and documents. Don't forget that the high humidity during this period increases insect activity, so repellent is a must-have item.

Regardless of the season, high SPF sunscreen and comfortable, broken-in walking shoes are always essential in Mali. Since the weather in Sikasso can be draining, it's a good idea to carry a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day.
