General Weather Overview

The climate in Hermosillo is hot and arid, typical of desert regions. The city boasts abundant sunshine almost all year round and very low rainfall levels. The weather here has a distinct seasonal character, offering tourists either an extremely hot summer or a very mild and pleasant winter.

Two main seasons are clearly observed in the city. Summer, lasting from May to September, is distinguished by intense heat. Daytime temperatures during this period often exceed 35°C, and in June and July can reach 40°C. Notably, the hottest months — July and August — also coincide with the short rainy season. Although total precipitation remains insignificant, the number of days with short showers increases. Winter, from November to March, is conversely very comfortable. At this time, warm and sunny weather sets in with pleasant daytime temperatures around 20-25°C and cooler nights.

Based on this, the best time to visit Hermosillo is the period from November to March, when the weather is ideal for walking, sightseeing, and comfortable relaxation. A trip during the summer months will require readiness for very high temperatures.

Temperature

The climate in Hermosillo features sharp contrasts between seasons, offering travellers a very hot summer and a mild, pleasant winter. The summer period, especially from June to August, is characterised by extremely high temperatures. During this time, average values hover in the range of 31-33°C. July is the hottest month, when the average temperature reaches 33°C, and daytime highs often rise to 38-39°C. The summer heat, particularly in July and August, is accompanied by an increase in rainfall, which can create a sensation of humidity.

Winter in Hermosillo, on the other hand, is very comfortable. The coolest months are December and January, with an average temperature of about 17°C. During the day, the air warms up to a pleasant 24-25°C, which is ideal for walks and exploring the city. However, nights can be quite fresh, with temperatures dropping to 9-10°C. Significant daily temperature fluctuations are characteristic of the Hermosillo climate, especially in the spring and autumn months, when the difference between day and night readings can be quite palpable.

Precipitation

In Hermosillo, there is a distinct division into dry and wet seasons, which is a key feature of the local climate. For most of the year, arid weather with minimal precipitation prevails in the city; however, in summer the situation changes drastically.

The bulk of annual precipitation falls during the short summer monsoon. The wettest months are July and August, each accounting for an average of about 11 rainy days. At this time, rains can be intense but short-lived, often in the form of heavy downpours. In September, the amount of rainfall decreases noticeably but still remains higher than in the other months of the year, concluding the rainy season.

A long dry season covers the period from October to June. During these months, precipitation is a great rarity. The driest months are April and May, when the probability of rain is practically zero. Snow is completely uncharacteristic for the Hermosillo climate, due to high temperatures throughout the year.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Hermosillo, it is important to consider its hot desert climate. The basis of your wardrobe at any time of the year should be light, loose, and breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton and linen. The sun here is very active, so be sure to bring headwear (a hat or cap), sunglasses, and sunscreen with a high protection factor. Since you will likely be exploring the city on foot, a pair of comfortable shoes, whether sandals or light trainers, is an absolute necessity.

Although the weather in Hermosillo is consistently warm, there are some seasonal peculiarities. The summer months, from June to September, are especially hot, with temperatures often rising to 40°C. During this period, choose the lightest clothing possible. July and August are also the months with the highest probability of rainfall, but these are usually short and heavy downpours, so a small umbrella or a light waterproof jacket will be useful. In winter (December-February), days remain warm and pleasant, but evenings and nights can be quite cool. For this time of year, the principle of layering is ideal: bring a sweater, fleece, or light jacket to feel comfortable after sunset.
