General Weather Overview

The city of León in Mexico is characterized by a generally pleasant and moderate climate throughout most of the year. Average annual temperatures are quite comfortable for travel; however, it is worth considering notable daily fluctuations, where the difference between day and night temperatures can be significant. Overall, the weather here allows for planning a trip in different seasons, but it is important to know about their characteristic features.

In León, two main seasons are clearly defined. The dry season, which usually lasts from November to April, is distinguished by an abundance of sunny days and minimal rainfall – often there is none at all. During this period, daytime temperatures are mild and pleasant, ideal for strolling and exploring the city, although nights, especially from December to February, can be quite cool (minimum temperatures drop to 8°C). April and May are the hottest and driest months before the onset of the rainy season, when maximum daytime temperatures can reach 29-30°C.

The rainy season in León usually begins in May, gradually gaining strength in June, and reaches its peak in July and August. During these summer months, the bulk of the annual precipitation falls, and the number of rainy days significantly increases (for example, up to 22 days in July). September also remains a rather wet month. Despite frequent rains, the air temperature during this period remains warm: average values hover around 19-22°C, and maximum daytime temperatures are usually in the range of 24-28°C. By October, the amount of precipitation noticeably decreases, and the weather again becomes predominantly dry.

Temperature

The climate in León is characterized by warmth throughout the year, but with noticeable seasonal changes and significant temperature variations between day and night. The annual range of average temperatures fluctuates from 15.2°C in December to 22.9°C in May. The hottest month is typically May, when the average daytime temperature is 22.9°C, and maximum values can reach 30.3°C. The coolest months are considered to be December and January, with an average temperature of about 15.2-15.4°C, while minimum night temperatures can drop to 8.2°C.

The summer period in León, especially from May to June, is characterized by hot weather, with maximum temperatures often exceeding 28-30°C. July and August remain warm, with average temperatures around 19.8°C and highs in the region of 25°C; however, this is also the period with the greatest number of rainy days, which can affect the feels-like temperature. Winter months, from December to February, offer mild and pleasant weather. Average daytime temperatures range from 15.2°C to 17.4°C, with maximum values reaching 22-25°C. Nights in winter are quite cool, with temperatures dropping to 8-10°C.

A characteristic feature of León's climate is significant daily temperature fluctuations. The difference between the maximum daytime and minimum nighttime temperature consistently constitutes 12-15°C, and sometimes more, throughout the year. For example, in January, the daytime maximum can be 22.5°C, and the nighttime minimum – 8.2°C. A similar trend continues even in the warmest months: in May, with a daytime peak of 30.3°C, the night temperature can drop to 15.4°C. This means that even after a hot day, evenings and nights bring noticeable coolness.

Precipitation

In the city of León, there is a distinct seasonality of precipitation, with a clear division into dry and wet periods during the year. The dry season usually covers the period from November to April, while the rainy season falls during the summer and early autumn months, reaching its peak in the middle of summer.

During the dry season, which lasts from November to April, precipitation in León is minimal or absent altogether. Months such as January, February, March, April, November, and December are characterized by zero average rainfall. The number of rainy days in this period is also very small, usually no more than one or two days a month. This is a time of predominantly clear and dry weather.

The rainy season begins gradually in May (1 mm of precipitation, about 6 rainy days) and gains strength by summer. The greatest amount of precipitation falls in July – on average 6 mm, while rains can occur up to 22 days a month. June (4 mm, 13 rainy days), August (5 mm, 18 rainy days), and September (4 mm, 16 rainy days) are also wet months with frequent rains. By October, the intensity of precipitation decreases (2 mm, about 8 rainy days), smoothly transitioning to the dry season. Given the climatic conditions, all precipitation in León falls in the form of rain; snow is not typical here.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to León, it is important to consider its predominantly warm climate with distinct dry and rainy seasons. Throughout the year, you will need light and breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, as daytime temperatures are often high. Layering your clothing will be your best friend, allowing you to feel comfortable both during warm daytime hours and on cool evenings, especially from December to February when the minimum temperature can drop to 8-10°C.

In the dry season, which lasts approximately from November to April, precipitation is unlikely. During the day it will be warm, so t-shirts, light trousers, or skirts will be appropriate. However, evenings and early mornings can be cool, especially in the winter months (December-February), so do not forget to take a sweater, fleece, or light jacket with you. During this period, an umbrella will likely be more useful for protection from the sun than from rain.

From May to October, the rainy season arrives in León, the peak of which falls in July-September, when the number of rainy days significantly increases. At this time, be sure to put a light waterproof jacket or a compact umbrella in your suitcase. Clothing made from quick-drying materials will also be very handy. Despite the rains, the air temperature remains comfortable, but increased humidity may be felt. It is also worth packing insect repellent, especially for evening walks.
