How to get to Tete

Getting There: Introduction

Tete is a major administrative centre situated on the banks of the majestic Zambezi River. The city is renowned for its warm climate and strategic location, which has made it a significant point on the regional map for centuries. The scenic views of the broad river channel create a special, memorable atmosphere here.

Here, travellers can view the famous Samora Machel Suspension Bridge — a true engineering symbol of the city. Tete attracts visitors with its authentic rhythm of life and an interesting blend of colonial heritage and modern dynamics, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the genuine character of Mozambique.

By Plane

The primary point of arrival for travellers choosing air transport is Chingozi Airport (TET), often simply referred to as Tete Airport. It is located in close proximity to the city boundaries, making the transfer to the city centre quick and tireless. Regular flights operate here, connecting the region with other major cities in Mozambique and key transport hubs in South Africa.

In cases where direct tickets are unavailable or the cost is too high, one might consider alternative routes via neighbouring cities. The closest is Blantyre in neighbouring Malawi — a distance of about 155 kilometres, which can be covered by car. Experienced tourists sometimes also plan their route through Chimoio or Lilongwe, continuing the journey by land to enjoy the African landscapes.

By Train

There is no direct passenger rail service to Tete. Although railway tracks exist in the region, they connect the coal deposits of neighbouring Moatize with the ocean coast and are used primarily for industrial freight transport. Tourists should not rely on this mode of transport when planning a trip directly to the city.

If train travel is an essential part of your itinerary, you will have to consider routes through neighbouring countries or distant regions of Mozambique. The nearest railway hubs with passenger service are located in Malawi (the cities of Blantyre and Lilongwe). From there, you will need to reach your destination by bus or taxi. Another option is to take a train to the city of Chimoio, south of Tete province, but the subsequent transfer by road will take considerable time.

The city has no major railway stations. Nearest cities with rail connections:

One of the most popular international routes leads from the Malawian city of Blantyre: buses and shuttle taxis cover the distance of 170 kilometres in approximately 4 hours, including time for border formalities. Regular connections are also established with the capital of Malawi, Lilongwe, from where the journey of about 350 kilometres takes an average of 6–7 hours.

For those moving within Mozambique, a key departure point often becomes Chimoio, located to the south. The trip from there takes about 5–6 hours, covering a distance of nearly 400 kilometres through quite picturesque terrain. Roads on these routes generally have paved surfaces, but travellers should allow extra time for possible delays and stops along the way.

By Car

Travelling by car to Tete allows you to plan your own schedule and enjoy the views of the Zambezi Valley. The shortest route leads from the Malawian city of Blantyre: the distance of approximately 170 km can be covered in 3–4 hours. Tips for Travellers

A trip to Tete promises to be unforgettable if you take into account local specifics and prepare for the journey in advance. We have gathered several useful recommendations for you that will make your stay in this warm city as comfortable and safe as possible.

  1. Clothing and Essentials. Tete is known as one of the hottest cities in the region, so give preference to light, loose-fitting clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Be sure to bring a head covering, high-quality sunglasses, and cream with a high UV protection factor, as the sun here is very active.
  2. Transport. To move around the city, it is most convenient and safe to use official taxis. Local minibuses, called "chapas," are often overcrowded and may be unfamiliar to tourists with luggage. It is best to agree on the cost of the trip with the taxi driver in advance, before getting into the car.
  3. Finances. The national currency is the Metical. It is better to exchange dollars or euros at banks or official exchange bureaus, avoiding street money changers. Although major hotels may accept cards, always carry cash, preferably in small denominations, for purchases at markets, in small shops, and for paying taxis.
  4. Health and Safety. Drink only bottled water and avoid ice in beverages at small cafes. Since the city is located on a river, the risk of malaria exists year-round: be sure to use repellents and wear clothing that covers the body in the evening. Having medical insurance is strictly mandatory.
  5. Communication. The official language of Mozambique is Portuguese. English is not understood everywhere, mostly only by staff at large hotels and business centres. Learn a few basic phrases in Portuguese or download an offline translator — this will help establish contact and show respect to the local residents.
  6. Local Etiquette. Residents of the city value politeness and a leisurely pace. Greeting is an important part of the culture: it is customary to shake hands and ask "How are you?". Show respect to elders and try not to raise your voice in public places, as this may be perceived as aggression.
  7. What to Avoid. It is categorically not recommended to photograph government buildings, police stations, military facilities, and personnel in uniform. The famous bridge over the Zambezi and the airport are also strategic objects — it is better to photograph them with caution and only from permitted angles to avoid problems with the police.
  8. Daily Schedule. Take into account the extreme heat during the midday hours. Plan excursions and active walks for the early morning or after 16:00, when the temperature becomes more comfortable for exploring the city.

By following these simple tips, you can avoid minor organisational difficulties and focus on the main thing — exploring the unique atmosphere and views of the Zambezi Valley. We wish you a peaceful and fascinating journey!
