What to Do

At Efteling, visitors can expect more than 36 attractions to suit any taste. For thrill-seekers, there are breathtaking roller coasters such as "Baron 1898", where the brave take a free fall into a mine shaft, the high-speed "Vogel Rok", and the double wooden coaster "Joris en de Draak". Families with children and those who prefer a more relaxed holiday will appreciate the numerous family entertainments and interactive shows.

One of the most famous and magical parts of the park is the "Fairy Tale Forest". Strolling along its paths, you will encounter animatronic characters from the stories of Hans Christian Andersen, the Brothers Grimm, and Charles Perrault. Here you can peek into the house of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, see Sleeping Beauty in her castle, or watch other favorite characters, which leaves a lasting impression, especially on children.

In addition to the attractions, Efteling offers guests a rich entertainment program. Throughout the day, colorful parades and theatrical performances involving stunt performers take place in the park. At nightfall, the grand Aquanura water show begins, considered one of the largest in Europe. Numerous restaurants, cozy cafes, and souvenir shops are located throughout the park, where you can relax, have a meal, and buy memorable gifts.

Getting There

Reaching Efteling, located in the town of Kaatsheuvel, is quite simple thanks to the well-developed transport network of the Netherlands. Whether you start your journey in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, or another major city, you can easily reach this magical world.

The most popular way to get to the park is by public transport. From Amsterdam and other cities, it is most convenient to take a train to one of the cities nearest to the park: Tilburg or 's-Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch). Direct buses (such as routes 136, 300, and 301) run regularly from these railway stations to the "Efteling" stop, which is located right at the park entrance. The bus ride from Tilburg takes only 15–20 minutes. The entire journey from Amsterdam, including the transfer, usually takes about two hours.

For those who prefer to travel by car, the trip is equally hassle-free. The park is situated near major highways, and a spacious parking lot is available at the main entrance, where you can leave your car for the entire day. Additionally, you can always use taxi services or book a transfer from the airport or nearby cities, which is especially convenient for families with children or large groups.

History & Facts

The history of Efteling began long before its official opening as a theme park. The idea of creating a sports and recreation park in Kaatsheuvel emerged as early as the 1930s, and the "Efteling Nature Park" foundation was established in 1950. Three people played a key role in transforming this territory into a magical world: artist Anton Pieck, filmmaker Peter Reijnders, and Mayor Reinier van der Heijden. It was Anton Pieck who created the park's unique, slightly nostalgic and romantic style, insisting on the use of natural materials instead of plastic and concrete. Peter Reijnders, in turn, applied his technical knowledge to create the animatronic figures, light, and sound effects that brought the fairy tale characters to life.

The park's official opening took place on May 31, 1952, when the famous "Fairy Tale Forest" was introduced to visitors. Initially, the forest featured only ten scenes from famous European fairy tales, such as "Sleeping Beauty," "Snow White," and "The Frog King." The success was overwhelming: in its first year of operation, the park was visited by about 240,000 people, and an entrance ticket cost only 80 cents. This success marked the beginning of rapid development: over time, the territory expanded, new attractions, restaurants, and even hotels appeared, turning Efteling into a full-fledged resort.

Today, Efteling is one of the oldest and most visited theme parks in Europe, welcoming more than five million guests annually. Interestingly, it opened three years before California's Disneyland. The park continues to carefully preserve Anton Pieck's heritage, combining a traditional fairy tale atmosphere with modern technology. It now features iconic attractions like the "Python" roller coaster (once the largest in Europe), the world's largest fountain show Aquanura, and many other entertainments that make Efteling a place people want to return to again and again.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy the magical atmosphere of Efteling, it is recommended to set aside at least one full day for your visit. This time will be enough to experience the main attractions and see the most iconic spots. However, given the park's vast territory and large number of activities, such a visit can be quite intense, especially on peak days.

For a deeper and more leisurely immersion into the fairy tale world, most experienced visitors suggest planning a trip for two or even three days. This approach allows you to explore all thematic zones without rushing, from high-adrenaline coasters to the famous "Fairy Tale Forest," as well as attend the colorful shows and performances held throughout the day. A two-day visit to Kaatsheuvel gives you the chance to fully appreciate all the details and secrets hidden within this amazing park in the Netherlands, and even catch the grand Aquanura evening fountain show.

Working Hours

Efteling is open to visitors year-round, but its operating hours may change depending on the season, day of the week, and special events. Generally, the park opens at 10:00 AM and remains open until 6:00 PM. However, during the summer months, as well as on weekends and public holidays, opening hours are often extended until 8:00 PM, 9:00 PM, or even 10:00 PM. In winter, during the "Winter Efteling" season, the park may open at 11:00 AM and close earlier. As the schedule can be unpredictable, it is strongly recommended to check the current operating hours on the park's official website before planning your trip.

To make your visit as comfortable as possible, especially during peak season (summer months, weekends, and school holidays), it is worth booking tickets online in advance. This not only guarantees your entry but also helps you avoid long queues at the ticket offices. Some attractions may offer a time-slot reservation system through a special app, which also helps reduce waiting times. Advance planning will allow you to immerse yourself in the park's magical atmosphere without any unnecessary fuss.
