History & Facts

Slot Zuylen, located near Utrecht, boasts a rich history dating back to the 14th century. The first written records of the structure date to 1391, when it was a fortified tower surrounded by a moat on lands belonging to Hendrik van Vianen. The tower's strategic location was due to its proximity to a now-disappeared branch of the Rhine, which played an important role at the time.

In 1449, through the marriage of Josina van de Haar to Dirk van Zuylen van Harmelen, the castle passed to the noble Van Zuylen family, who remained its guardians for centuries, until 2011. The castle's early history faced many challenges: in 1482, it was significantly damaged during the so-called "Hook and Cod Wars." Further major damage was caused by a powerful tornado in 1674, which also left a destructive mark on the main cathedral in Utrecht.

By the end of the 19th century, Slot Zuylen had fallen into disrepair and was in ruins. This was because the Van Zuylen family eventually moved to Bruges, and the castle was left without proper care for a long time. The last Dutch owner, Anton-Martinus van Zuylen van Nijevelt (1708–1801), had no heirs and passed the ownership rights to the Mayor of Bruges, Jean-Jacques van Zuylen van Nijevelt (1752–1846). It was in the late 19th century that the castle was extensively restored and rebuilt in the then-popular Neo-Gothic style, giving it the majestic appearance we see today.
