How to get to Timaru

For those flying from abroad, the main gateway is usually the airport in the city of Christchurch (147 km), which possesses a wide network of international routes. Alternative arrival options could be the airports of Dunedin or Hokitika, from where it is easy to continue the journey by ground transport.

At the moment, there is no direct passenger railway service to the city of Timaru, as the local line is used predominantly for freight transport. Travellers who prefer trains are recommended to travel to the nearest major hubs.

The closest stations serving tourist routes are located in the cities of Christchurch and Dunedin. From there, the remaining part of the journey to the coast can be comfortably covered by intercity bus or rental car.

If you plan to drive from the direction of Hokitika, the route will pass through beautiful mountain passes and take about 4.5 hours (354 km). Car rental is often a more economical solution compared to taxis for such long distances, allowing you to make stops in the most beautiful places.
