General Weather Overview

Rivas is characterized by a hot tropical climate with surprisingly stable temperatures throughout the year. Travellers won't have to worry about sudden cold snaps: average thermometer readings confidently stay in the range of 26°C to 28°C. Thanks to this, it is always warm here, making the city an attractive destination for lovers of summer weather in any month.

Two seasons can be clearly traced throughout the year. The dry period lasts from January to April, when precipitation is practically absent and sunny days are guaranteed. Starting from May and continuing right through to November, the picture changes: the number of rainy days increases significantly, reaching its peak in September and October. At this time nature comes alive, but tourists should be prepared for frequent, albeit warm, tropical downpours.

Temperature

The climate in the city of Rivas is distinguished by enviable stability, characteristic of the tropical latitudes of Nicaragua. Eternal summer reigns here throughout the year, and sharp temperature fluctuations are practically unobserved. The hottest period is traditionally April, preceding the start of the rainy season, when the average daily maximum reaches 30.3°C, and the average temperature is around 27.9°C. At this time, the sun is most active, creating an atmosphere of true tropical heat.

The so-called "winter" in Rivas feels more like a pleasant mild season. In December and January, considered the coolest months, the average temperature drops only slightly — to a comfortable 26.1°C — 26.2°C. This time is ideal for those who prefer mild warmth without exhausting heat. The summer months (from June to August) are characterized by stable readings around 27°C; however, due to the large number of rainy days (up to 28 days a month), the air becomes more humid and sultry.

Diurnal temperature fluctuations in the region are minimal. The difference between daily highs and nightly lows is small and usually amounts to just 3–4 degrees. Even on the coolest nights, the thermometer rarely drops below 24°C. This means evenings in Rivas remain very warm and cosy all year round, allowing you to enjoy nightlife or walks without the need to bundle up.

Precipitation

The climate in the city of Rivas is characterized by a clear division into dry and wet seasons, which is important to consider when planning a trip. The beginning of the year, from January to April, is considered the driest period. In these months, the probability of precipitation is minimal: for example, in February and March, only about 4 rainy days are recorded, and rainfall levels are close to zero. This is an excellent time for walks and excursions under clear skies.

With the arrival of May, the weather changes abruptly, marking the beginning of the rainy season. The number of days with precipitation increases significantly — from 22 in May to peak values in September and October, when rains can occur almost daily (up to 29 days a month). During this period, precipitation becomes a regular occurrence, so an umbrella or raincoat will be indispensable items in a tourist's luggage.

Towards the end of the year, the rainy season gradually recedes. Already in November, the number of wet days decreases to 20, and in December to 13, indicating a smooth transition back to the dry season. Despite frequent rains in the summer and autumn months, they bring a pleasant freshness, allowing one to enjoy the tropical nature of Nicaragua.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Rivas, prepare for the hot tropical climate that reigns here all year round. The average temperature stays consistently around +26...+28°C, so the basis of your wardrobe should be light clothing made from natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Be sure to pack a wide-brimmed hat, high-quality sunglasses, and high-factor sunscreen in your suitcase, as the sun in Nicaragua is very active at any time of the year.

When choosing items, it is important to consider the seasonality of rainfall. From January to April is the dry season, when rain is a rarity, and you will only need summer clothes. However, from May to November, and especially in September and October, the number of rainy days increases sharply. During this period, it is highly recommended to take a light raincoat or poncho, as well as a compact umbrella. Footwear for the rainy season should be waterproof or quick-drying, for example, rubber sandals or Crocs.

For walking around the city and its surroundings, choose comfortable, broken-in shoes in which your feet will not get tired. Despite the heat, it makes sense to bring one light long-sleeved sweater or windbreaker: it will come in handy for protection against insects in the evenings or from the chill of air conditioners in buses and hotels. Also, do not forget swimming gear, as the proximity to water encourages relaxation.
