How to get to Skardu

When planning a trip to Pakistan, many tourists wonder how to get to Skardu — a major tourism hub and the capital of the Baltistan region. The fastest and most impressive way to reach the region is by air. Skardu Airport (IATA code: KDU) is located in a valley amidst the mountains and receives regular flights, with the main departure point being the capital of Pakistan — Islamabad. The flight time is approximately one hour, allowing you to avoid the long and tiring journey along winding mountain roads.

This flight is often called one of the most scenic in the world: in clear weather, passengers can view the majestic peaks of the Himalayas and the Karakoram, including Nanga Parbat and even K2. However, travelers should note that flights to Skardu are highly dependent on weather conditions. Due to the complex terrain and visibility requirements, departures may be rescheduled or cancelled, so it is recommended to include buffer days in your travel schedule.

It is impossible to get directly to Skardu by train, as there is absolutely no railway connection in this high-altitude region. The extreme terrain with steep cliffs and gorges does not allow for laying tracks, so trains do not operate in this part of Pakistan.

The neighbouring city of Gilgit also does not have a railway station. Tourists preferring ground transport usually have to travel by train to major cities on the plains, such as Rawalpindi, and cover the remaining part of the journey by car or bus along the mountain roads.

Despite the relatively short distance, the difficult mountain terrain dictates a low driving speed, turning this transfer into a full-fledged excursion through one of the most picturesque and inaccessible areas of the world.

The most comfortable and popular route for car travellers begins in the city of Gilgit, which serves as the main gateway to the region. The distance to Skardu is about 200 kilometres, and travel time along the updated strategic road takes approximately 4–5 hours. Tourists often hire private SUVs (Jeeps) to comfortably navigate the mountain serpentines and make stops at the most picturesque spots, for example, at the junction point of the world's three greatest mountain ranges; the cost of renting a car with a driver depends on the season and negotiation skills.

Although looking at a map it might seem that Srinagar and high-altitude Leh are very close, there are no direct roads for tourists from that side due to impassable mountain ranges and the lack of active border crossings. The majestic peaks of the Himalayas and the Karakoram create a natural barrier, so the only accessible corridor for entering the valley by car remains the route from Gilgit.

1. Clothing and Equipment. Weather in the mountains is changeable. Even in summer, nights can be cool, so be sure to bring a fleece jacket, a windbreaker, and comfortable trekking shoes. 2. Transport. Public transport within the city is limited. For trips to remote lakes (such as Satpara or Kachura) and the Katpana Desert, it is best to rent a Jeep with an experienced local driver. Ordinary passenger cars may not handle the rocky roads outside the city centre.
3. Finances. Cash Pakistani Rupees are required almost everywhere in the region. ATMs may work intermittently or not accept certain foreign cards, and exchange offices are scarce. It is recommended to carry a sufficient supply of cash, having exchanged it in advance in Islamabad.
4. Health and Safety. Due to the high altitude, the sun here is very active — be sure to use high SPF cream, wear a head covering, and sunglasses. Assemble a personal first aid kit, as the assortment in local pharmacies may be limited.
5. Communication. Locals speak predominantly Balti and Urdu. In hotels and tourist spots, staff often speak English, but learning a few basic greeting phrases in the local language will be useful for establishing contact.
