How to get to Cauayan

How to get there: Introduction

Cauayan is a vibrant agro-industrial and trading centre in the province of Isabela, located in the northern part of the Philippines. The city serves as the region's main commercial hub, attracting visitors with its developing infrastructure and high business activity. You can get here in various ways: by taking a domestic flight or choosing a bus journey along the island's scenic roads.

By Plane

The fastest and most convenient way to reach the city is by air. Cauayan is served by its own airport (IATA code: CYZ), which accepts regular direct flights from Manila. The flight time from the capital is usually about one hour, which allows for significant time savings compared to ground transport.

The airport is located in the immediate vicinity of the city centre. Upon arrival, travellers can easily reach their hotel or the business district by using local taxis, tricycles, or a pre-booked transfer.

By Train

At the moment, it is impossible to reach Cauayan by train, as there is no railway service in the city or the entire province of Isabela. The railway network on Luzon island is poorly developed and is limited mainly to the National Capital Region and southern directions, so trains do not run to this part of the country.

The nearest major settlements also do not have railway stations, which excludes this mode of transport when planning a route. Travellers heading to the north of the Philippines are advised to use the extensive network of intercity buses or a direct flight.

By Bus

The bus network on Luzon island is excellently developed, and Cauayan serves as an important transit hub for the province of Isabela. The most popular and in-demand route leads from the country's capital, Manila. A journey in this direction usually takes from 8 to 10 hours depending on the traffic situation and time of day. Many travellers prefer to choose overnight "sleeper buses" to sleep comfortably on the road and arrive in the city in the morning, saving on hotel accommodation.

A bus trip is not only a budget-friendly way to get to your destination but also an opportunity to see the real Philippines from the window. The route runs along the main highway through picturesque valleys, rice fields, and small colourful settlements. In addition to direct services from the capital, the city is connected by regular bus services to neighbouring regional centres, such as Tuguegarao and Santiago, making it a convenient point for planning complex routes across the north of the country.

By Car

Travelling by car to Cauayan allows you to enjoy the authentic landscapes of the Cagayan Valley and see provincial life from within. The shortest and most comfortable route leads from the city of Tuguegarao: you can cover the distance of about 100 kilometres along the highway in 2–2.5 hours. If you are departing from Lal-lo, the road will take about 4 hours (185 km), passing through picturesque agricultural lands and small settlements.

A longer adventure awaits those driving from historic Vigan. A distance of about 380 kilometres will require 8 to 10 hours of driving, as the path partially passes through winding mountain sections connecting the western and eastern parts of Luzon island. Taxis or private transfers for such distances are available, but the cost of the trip will be high and is often negotiated individually, usually exceeding several thousand pesos.

Traveller Tips

A trip to Cauayan promises to be eventful if you prepare in advance for the specifics of this dynamic city in the northern Philippines. To ensure your visit is as comfortable as possible and free of surprises, we have collected the most important recommendations for tourists.

  1. Clothing and Essentials. The climate in the region is tropical, so the best choice is light, breathable clothing made of cotton or linen. Be sure to bring a hat and sunglasses. If the trip is planned between June and November (the rainy season), do not forget a compact umbrella or raincoat.
  2. Transport. The most common way to get around the city is by tricycle (motorcycles with a covered sidecar). It is convenient and inexpensive, but it is important to agree on the fare with the driver before boarding, especially if you are travelling a long distance or with luggage.
  3. Finances. The official currency is the Philippine Peso. Major shopping centres, such as SM City Cauayan, accept cards, but you will definitely need cash to pay for transport, purchases at markets, and in small cafes. ATMs are available in the city centre, but it is better to have a supply of small denominations.
  4. Health and Safety. Drink only bottled water and avoid drinks with ice at street stalls if you are not sure of their quality. The city is generally safe, but it is worth using repellents for protection against mosquitoes, especially in the evening.
  5. Communication. English is widely spoken and used in business, menus, and signs, so there will be no communication problems. Locals speak predominantly Ilocano, but also understand Tagalog (Filipino) perfectly.
  6. Local Etiquette. Filipinos are known for their hospitality and friendliness. A smile is the best way to start a conversation. When interacting, try to be polite and restrained; it is not customary here to raise your voice or openly express anger in public.
  7. What to Avoid. Do not leave valuables unattended in public places and transport. Also, try not to photograph locals without their permission, although most often they will be happy to be in the frame.
  8. Extra Tip. Cauayan is often called the "Mushroom City of the North". Do not miss the opportunity to try local mushroom delicacies or buy crispy mushroom chips (mushroom chicharon) as an original and delicious souvenir.

By following these simple practical tips, you can avoid minor inconveniences and focus on exploring the culture and attractions of Isabela province. May your journey leave only pleasant memories!
