Anadyr is the easternmost city in Russia, the administrative centre of Chukotka, located in the permafrost zone. This unique destination attracts travellers ready for the rugged beauty of the Arctic and an introduction to the culture of the indigenous peoples of the North. Due to its geographical remoteness and the absence of ground roads connecting the region to the mainland, getting here is practically only possible by plane.

Getting There: Introduction
By Plane
The fastest and most reliable way to reach this remote region is by air. Ugolny International Airport (DYR) serves as the main air gateway to Chukotka, receiving regular flights from Moscow and major cities in the Far East.
The flight to Anadyr is an adventure in itself, taking about 8–9 hours from the capital. The airport is located on the opposite bank of the estuary; however, it is well connected to the city by various modes of transport depending on the season.

By Train
Railway connections to Anadyr are completely absent due to the extremely difficult climatic conditions and the remoteness of the region. Railways end thousands of kilometres away from Chukotka, so the train cannot be considered as a way to get here.
Travellers who prefer ground transport will have to abandon this idea when planning a route to the Russian Federation in this direction. The only reasonable alternative to the train remains air travel.
The city has no major railway stations. Nearest cities with rail connections:

By Bus
It is impossible to reach Anadyr by intercity bus, as the city is not connected by a network of roads to the rest of the mainland. The absence of highways makes bus communication with other regions physically unfeasible.
Buses in this region operate exclusively on intra-city routes and to the nearest settlements. For tourists arriving from other regions, this mode of transport is not relevant for arrival.
By Car
A trip to Anadyr by private car is inaccessible for the ordinary tourist due to the lack of year-round roads leading to the region. In the winter period, extreme routes via "winter roads" exist, but they require special all-terrain vehicles and professional skills.
Using taxis for intercity trips is also impossible. Car transport is used here only locally, after arriving in the city by plane.
Travel Tips
A journey to Chukotka is an expedition requiring serious preparation and knowledge of local specifics. Here are several important tips that will help you spend your time comfortably in this harsh but beautiful land.
- Border Control Regulations. Anadyr is located in a border zone. To enter, all tourists (even Russian citizens) must arrange a special pass in advance, otherwise, you will not be allowed to leave the airport.
- Airport Transfer. The airport is separated from the city by an estuary. The mode of transport depends on the season: in summer — by boat or barge, in winter — by taxi over the ice, and in the off-season (May, October) — only by helicopter or hovercraft, which is quite expensive.
- Equipment. The weather changes instantly. Even in summer, be sure to take a windproof jacket, a hat, gloves, and high-quality trekking shoes.
- Prices. Be prepared for the fact that food and services cost significantly more here than the national average due to complex northern logistics.
- Connectivity. Mobile internet may work slower than what you are used to, and Wi-Fi is not available everywhere. It is recommended to download offline maps of the city in advance.
- Cash. Although cards are accepted in many shops, having a reserve of cash is mandatory, especially for paying for the crossing over the estuary or for purchases at the market.
- Souvenirs. The best memory of the trip is the work of bone carvers (made from walrus tusk or reindeer antler). Buy them in specialised places to avoid problems with export regulations.
By taking these nuances into account, you can avoid domestic difficulties and fully enjoy the unique atmosphere of the Far North.
