History & Facts

The Ivanovo Zoo in Ivanovo has a fascinating history that began not with large-scale construction, but with enthusiasm and a love for nature. In the late 1980s, zoologist Arkady Valentinovich Borzov organized a "young naturalists" circle at the Palace of Pioneers and Schoolchildren. The first inhabitants of this wildlife corner were small rodents, turtles, and several monkeys and parrots. Over time, the collection grew, and in 1992, a separate building was rented for the circle, where outdoor enclosures gradually began to appear, foreshadowing the birth of a real zoo.

The official founding date is considered April 1, 1994, when the order to create the "City Children's Zoological Park" was signed. However, it opened its doors to visitors a bit later—on September 14, 1996. This day was a real celebration for residents and guests of the city. In 2004, the institution received its modern, more official name—the Municipal Budgetary Cultural Institution "Ivanovo Zoological Park," which it is still known as today.

One of the most interesting facts is related to the zoo's symbol. A lynx is depicted on its coat of arms, and this is no coincidence. This graceful predator was immortalized in memory of a real resident—a lynx named Vasya (also known as Kunak). This animal was not just a zoo inhabitant, but a real movie star, the main character of the film "The Lynx Returns." Vasya was gifted to the zoo by the Mosfilm Zoo Base, and his story became an integral part of the Ivanovo Zoo's legacy, symbolizing the connection between the animal world and art.

Time Needed

When planning a visit to the Ivanovo Zoo, keep in mind that you will need between 1.5 and 3 hours to fully experience the animals and the grounds. This amount of time is usually enough to leisurely walk past all the enclosures, observe the animals, and enjoy your stroll.

Within this timeframe, visitors usually manage to see the main exhibits, which feature various animal species. If your visit includes participating in any interactive programs or simply relaxing in the zoo's well-maintained areas, it's better to aim for the upper end of this time range. Of course, if you are visiting with young children who want to linger longer at each enclosure, or if you are a big wildlife enthusiast yourself, your visit may take even more time.

Working Hours

The Ivanovo Zoo in Ivanovo welcomes visitors daily. According to current information, the zoo is open from 10:00 to 18:00. It is a wonderful place for a family outing where you can see a diverse range of animal species.
