History & Facts

This unique venue owes its existence to Dmitry Gennadievich Burylin—a famous Ivanovo-Voznesensk industrialist, patron of the arts, and passionate collector. It was his desire to enlighten his home region that served as the foundation for the museum. The cornerstone was laid in August 1912, and the building, designed in the "Italian palazzo" style, was the work of architect Pavel Trubnikov.

Construction took place during challenging times, but despite financial difficulties, the magnificent building was completed by 1914. The grand opening was held on December 26, 1914, turning Ivanovo into one of the significant cultural centers of the empire. Even before the opening, Burylin's collection was famous throughout Russia, having been showcased at major exhibitions, including the 1896 Nizhny Novgorod exposition.

After the 1917 revolution, the museum was nationalized, and the founder himself continued to work there as a curator for some time, striving to preserve the integrity of his life's work. In 1958, part of the collection (over 16,000 items) was transferred to form the Ivanovo Regional Art Museum, but the remaining collection still amazes visitors with its scale.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all the halls and delve into the details of the extensive collection, it is recommended to set aside 2 to 3 hours for your visit. This is sufficient time to become acquainted with the main sections of the exhibition.

If you are a connoisseur of rare coins, weapons, or antique books, your visit might easily stretch to half a day. The depth of the collection assembled by patron Dmitry Burylin is such that every exhibit deserves individual attention and study.
