Perched atop the picturesque Amur Cliff, offering an endless view of the majestic river, rises the Monument to Muravyov-Amursky—one of the most recognizable landmarks cherished by Khabarovsk. This impressive bronze monument is dedicated to the Governor-General of East Siberia, whose contribution to the exploration of these lands is hard to overestimate.
For many travelers visiting the city and the country of Russia, this site feels surprisingly familiar. The secret is simple: it is this image of the sculpture against the backdrop of the river that adorns the 5,000-ruble banknote. The statue, standing about 5 meters tall, is set on a high granite pedestal featuring plaques with the names of the heroes who participated in the annexation of the Amur region.
The location for the monument was not chosen by chance. Count Muravyov-Amursky is depicted at full height in a general's uniform, his gaze directed toward the border, symbolizing a watchful eye over the eastern frontiers. Today, it is not just a historical site, but the main symbol of the city and a favorite walking spot for both locals and tourists.
