How to get to Neryungri

Getting There: Introduction

Neryungri is the second-largest city in Yakutia, located in the southern part of the republic amidst picturesque hills and taiga forests. This important industrial centre attracts travellers with its rugged northern charm and the opportunity to experience the authentic Far East. You can reach the city of Neryungri by a direct flight, by railway, or by car along the federal highway.

By Plane

The fastest way to reach the region is by air via Chulman airport, which is located not far from the city limits. It receives regular flights from central regions and serves as the main air gateway to Southern Yakutia.

Alternatively, you can consider flying to neighbouring cities, for example, to the city of Tynda (169 km away). Other options, such as Magdagachi or Chara, are located significantly further away, so such a route would require a lengthy ground transfer.

By Train

Contrary to common misconceptions, the city has excellent railway accessibility thanks to the Neryungri-Passazhirskaya station. This is a vital hub of the Amur-Yakut Mainline, where direct trains arrive from Moscow, Khabarovsk, and other major cities of the country, ensuring a reliable connection with the rest of the nation.

Travelling by train allows you to enjoy views of Siberian nature, although it takes quite a significant amount of time. If direct tickets are unavailable, a convenient transfer point is the capital of the BAM railway — the city of Tynda, located just a few hours away by rail.

By Bus

Centralised information about long-distance intercity bus routes to Neryungri is often absent from global aggregators, so it is best to check the schedule with local carriers. Regular bus services and minibuses primarily connect the city with the nearest settlements of the district and railway stations.

The most popular option may be a bus transfer from the city of Tynda or from the airport if you have arrived on a connecting flight. The journey along the "Lena" highway will offer impressive views of the taiga, but travel time depends heavily on weather conditions.

Traveller Tips

A trip to Southern Yakutia is a unique experience requiring careful preparation due to the severe climate conditions. To make your stay in the city as comfortable as possible, please follow these recommendations.

  1. Clothing. In winter, it is extremely cold here (down to -50°C), so high-quality thermal underwear, a down jacket, and warm footwear are essential. In summer, the weather is changeable; a windbreaker and mosquito repellent will be useful.
  2. Transport. Due to the hilly terrain, walking can be tiring. It is most convenient to get around by taxi, which is relatively inexpensive here.
  3. Finances. Bank cards are accepted in supermarkets and hotels, but it is better to have a supply of cash rubles for markets and small kiosks.
  4. Health. There are pharmacies in the city, but it is better to bring specific medicines with you. In summer, protection against gnats and ticks is mandatory when going out into nature.
  5. Communication. The main language of communication is Russian. Locals are generally responsive and ready to help tourists.
  6. Local Etiquette. In the region, there is great respect for nature and local traditions. Do not leave litter in the forest and behave modestly.
  7. What to Avoid. It is not recommended to go into the taiga without an experienced guide — the wild nature begins immediately outside the city limits, and there is a high risk of getting lost or encountering wild animals.
  8. Gastronomy. Be sure to try local delicacies: stroganina (sliced frozen fish), venison, and northern berries, which can be bought at local markets.

By following these simple tips, you can safely enjoy the atmosphere of this northern city and bring home only pleasant memories.
