Overview

Suzdal has a humid continental climate, characterized by distinct seasons and notable temperature fluctuations throughout the year. Prepare for a traditional Russian winter and enjoy a warm, but not stiflingly hot, summer.

Winters in Suzdal are quite cold, with average monthly temperatures well below freezing, especially in January and February, when the thermometer can drop to -9.7°C. In contrast, summers offer comfortable warmth: in July, the average temperature reaches +19°C, with highs potentially exceeding +23°C. Spring and autumn are transitional periods with gradual temperature changes. Precipitation is distributed relatively evenly throughout the year, with a slight increase in both volume and the number of rainy days in July.

Temperature

Suzdal experiences a temperature regime classic for Central Russia, with clearly defined seasons. The annual temperature cycle shows a significant contrast: from frosty winter months to warm summers. The coldest period is traditionally January and February, when the average air temperature stays around -7.0°C to -7.5°C, and night minimums regularly drop to -9.7°C. The warmest time of year is considered to be July, with an average temperature of +19.0°C, and August, when the thermometer averages +18.1°C, while daytime maximums can reach +23.6°C.

Summer months in Suzdal offer a pleasant, comfortable warmth, ideal for long walks and exploring the numerous sights. In June, the average temperature is +16.5°C, gradually rising toward July, when daytime highs often reach +23.6°C. August also remains very warm, with average maximum temperatures around +23.1°C. The summer period is characterized by noticeable daily temperature fluctuations: while it can be quite warm during the day, nights bring refreshing coolness, with temperatures dropping on average to +11°C...+14°C. This creates comfortable conditions for resting after a busy day.

Winter in Suzdal is a time of real Russian frosts, though without the extreme cold characteristic of more northern latitudes. From December to February, stable frosty weather sets in. In December, the average temperature is -5.3°C, and in January and February, it drops to -7.0°C...-7.5°C. Nighttime temperatures in these months can reach -9.7°C, while daytime highs rarely rise above -3.4°C...-5.4°C. Daily temperature fluctuations in winter are less pronounced than in summer but still present, averaging 4-5°C, which should be considered when planning winter activities.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Suzdal occurs year-round, with a fairly even distribution and no distinct rainy or dry seasons. Monthly precipitation amounts are low, averaging around 2 mm in most months. There are small fluctuations: July sees slightly more precipitation, while March sees slightly less.

The highest amount of precipitation, 3 mm, falls in July, which also leads in the number of precipitation days—averaging 15 days. The "driest" month in terms of volume is March, with a figure of only 1 mm. March, along with August and September, also has the lowest frequency of precipitation—about 9 days each month. Winter months like January and December, as well as October in autumn, are characterized by fairly frequent but light precipitation, totaling about 14 "wet" days each.

The nature of precipitation in Suzdal depends directly on the time of year. During the cold period, which lasts approximately from November to March when average monthly temperatures drop below freezing, precipitation falls mainly as snow. With the arrival of warmer weather from April to October, the city primarily sees rain. Given that a small amount of precipitation is spread over a significant number of days, these are most often light, perhaps drizzly, rains or low-intensity snowfalls, rather than heavy downpours or blizzards.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Suzdal, be sure to bring comfortable shoes—you'll be doing a lot of walking along ancient streets and monastery grounds. The key principle for packing should be layering your clothes. This will allow you to easily adapt to changing weather and feel comfortable during both cool mornings and warmer daytime hours, regardless of the season.

For the spring-summer period (April to August), choose light but varied clothing. In May and June, when average temperatures range from +11.9°C to +16.5°C, T-shirts, light trousers, or skirts will be useful, but don't forget a sweater or fleece, as well as a windbreaker or light jacket, especially for evening strolls or in case of cool weather. July is the warmest month (averaging +19°C), but it also has the highest number of precipitation days (about 15), so a compact umbrella or a light raincoat will come in handy. Don't forget sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself from the summer sun, especially if you're planning long outdoor excursions.

In autumn and winter (September to March), your wardrobe should be significantly warmer. As early as September and October, when temperatures gradually drop (from +12.5°C down to +6.2°C), you'll need warm sweaters, a mid-season jacket, and perhaps a hat. From November to March, when temperatures stay consistently below freezing (averaging -7.5°C in January), a warm winter jacket or down coat, hat, scarf, gloves, and insulated waterproof shoes are essential. Given the frequent snowfall in winter (up to 14 "wet" days in January) and rain during the shoulder seasons, water-repellent outerwear and footwear will make your stay in Suzdal much more pleasant.
