General Weather Overview

Dakar, the capital of Senegal, boasts a warm and predominantly sunny climate throughout the year, making it an attractive destination for sun-seekers. Average annual temperatures fluctuate within a comfortable range, rarely dropping below 20°C even during the "coolest" months. The climate can be described as tropical with a distinct dry season and a short rainy season.

Two main seasons are clearly distinguishable in Dakar. The long dry season lasts approximately from November to May. During this time, rainfall is virtually non-existent, and the sky remains clear, providing ideal conditions for exploring the city and its surroundings. Air temperatures during this period range from +21°C to nearly +27°C, ensuring comfortable conditions for walking and outdoor activities.

The short rainy season usually falls between June and October, peaking in August and September. These months see the majority of rainfall, although it is rarely prolonged. Air temperatures during the rainy season rise slightly, reaching +27°C to +28°C, and humidity feels higher. Despite the rain, there are still plenty of sunny days, allowing you to enjoy your holiday.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Dakar is characterized by pleasant stability throughout the year, without sharp daily fluctuations. The annual range of average maximum daytime temperatures usually varies from 23.7°C in March to 29.7°C in October. The hottest months, when the average air temperature holds at 27-28°C, are typically August, September, and October. The coolest months are considered to be from February to April, with average temperatures around 22-23°C; March is the "freshest" month with an average temperature of 21.7°C and average minimum night-time temperatures dropping to 19.7°C.

The summer period, coinciding with the rainy season (roughly from June to October), is characterized by consistently high temperatures. During the day, the air warms up on average to 27-30°C (average maximums from 26.7°C in June to 29.7°C in October), while nights remain very warm, with average minimum temperatures in the range of 23.4°C - 26.6°C. For instance, in October, the warmest month by average temperature (28.1°C), the average maximum temperature reaches 29.7°C, and the average minimum is 26.6°C. Humidity is elevated during these months, which may create a sensation of more intense heat, despite the refreshing ocean breezes.

The winter (dry) season, lasting from November to May, brings more moderate and comfortable temperatures to Dakar. Daytime maximums during this period vary from 23.7°C (March) to 29.1°C (November, which still retains the heat of the departing summer), but mostly stay within the pleasant range of 24-27°C. Nights become noticeably cooler compared to summer, with average minimum temperatures from 19.7°C (March) to 24.8°C (November), providing pleasant freshness. Temperature fluctuations between day and night in Dakar are generally small throughout the year, usually amounting to 2.5-5°C, making the climate quite even without sharp daily spikes.

Precipitation

Dakar sees a clear division into a dry season and a rainy season, which determines rainfall patterns throughout the year. The vast majority of the year is characterized by very little rainfall or a complete absence thereof.

The long dry season covers the period from November to May. During these months, as well as in June, rainfall amounts to 0 mm, and there are practically no rainy days (0-1 day in June). This time is ideal for those who prefer sunny weather without precipitation. The rainy season in Dakar is short and falls mainly in the summer months, peaking in August and September. August is the wettest month, with an average of 5 mm of rainfall, and the number of rainy days reaching 14. September also sees significant precipitation (4 mm) and about 11 rainy days. July and October are transitional months to and from the rainy season, with less rainfall (1 mm each) and fewer rainy days (5 and 2, respectively).

Thus, if you are planning a trip to Dakar and want to minimize the chance of rain, it is best to choose the months from November to June. Whereas from July to October, especially in August and September, one should be prepared for periodic, though not always prolonged, rains. Snow is uncharacteristic for Dakar due to its tropical climate.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Dakar, focus on light and breathable clothing suitable for a warm tropical climate. It is sunny and hot here for most of the year, although a pleasant ocean breeze often helps make the midday heat more bearable. T-shirts, shorts, light trousers, and sundresses made from natural fabrics like cotton or linen will be your best companions. Don't forget swimwear for relaxing on the Atlantic coast! Key items in your luggage should be high SPF sunscreen, headwear (a hat or cap), and quality sunglasses, as the sun in Senegal is very strong. Comfortable walking shoes – sandals or light trainers – are a must for exploring the city.

Although it is warm year-round in Dakar, there are slight seasonal nuances to consider when packing your suitcase. During the dry season (roughly from November to May), when there is practically no rainfall and temperatures are very comfortable, a light cardigan or wrap may come in handy for evening walks, especially between February and April when nights can be a bit fresher (minimum temperatures around 20°C). During the short rainy season (from June to October, peaking in August-September with up to 5 mm of rainfall), it is worth packing a light raincoat or a compact umbrella, although downpours are usually brief. Insect repellent may also be useful during this time due to higher humidity. Regardless of the season, choose clothes in which you will feel comfortable moving around and enjoying all the beauties of Dakar.
