What to Do

In Wadköping, everyone will find something to their liking, from peaceful strolls through historical settings to active participation in cultural life. One of the main points of interest is the "King's Cottage" (Kungsstugan) — a building with a four-hundred-year history that is considered a symbol of this place. Inside, exhibitions are often held, telling stories about the life and traditions of past centuries.

For lovers of authentic items, craft workshops and small souvenir shops are open. Here, you can not only watch artisans at work but also purchase handmade items. After exploring the exhibits, be sure to stop by the local bakery or cafe to try freshly baked Swedish cinnamon buns in a unique historical atmosphere.

The museum grounds regularly host themed fairs, workshops, and seasonal festivals that bring the space to life and allow guests to dive deeper into local folklore. It’s an excellent place for family leisure, where history is presented in a light and engaging way.

Getting There

Finding this historical district is very easy: Wadköping is located within walking distance of the city center. If you are already visiting the famous Örebro Castle, simply take a pleasant walk along the banks of the Svartån River toward the city park, following the signs.

For those arriving from other regions, it is most convenient to use the train service or buses coming from Stockholm. The journey from Örebro station to the entrance of the museum complex takes only a few minutes by public transport or taxi.

A pleasant bonus for travelers is that entry to the open-air museum grounds is absolutely free. This makes it an ideal place to independently explore Swedish culture during a leisurely walk.

History & Facts

The idea for creating this wonderful place was born in the mid-20th century. At that time, the active modernization of Örebro threatened to destroy many old wooden buildings. To preserve this unique architectural heritage, city authorities decided to relocate the most valuable buildings to a separate district, creating a true historical sanctuary.

The museum's name has an interesting literary background. Wadköping is the name of a fictional town from the works of the famous Swedish writer Hjalmar Bergman. A native of Örebro, he often set his books in a town that combined features of his hometown and Västerås. Thus, the museum became not only an architectural monument but also a literary one.

Today, you can see buildings here that are centuries old. Each building in the museum has its own history and has been carefully restored to accurately convey the spirit of old Sweden. Wadköping serves as a living reminder of the importance of preserving cultural roots in a rapidly changing world.

Time Needed

To see the entire area without rushing and look into the most interesting corners, most visitors need 1.5 to 3 hours. This is enough time to walk leisurely through the cobbled streets and examine the details of the ancient facades.

If you plan to visit the art galleries, linger in the workshops, or have a traditional Swedish coffee break with pastries at the local cafe, we recommend setting aside half a day for your visit. Wadköping is a place where you'll want to slow down and simply enjoy the moment.

Working Hours

The open-air museum is open for walks year-round; however, exhibitions and shops operate on a set schedule. Wadköping welcomes guests daily according to the following schedule:
