Hotell Gamla Fängelset

About

Imagine a place where a stark historical past meets modern Scandinavian hospitality. Hotell Gamla Fängelset (The Old Jail Hotel) is one of the most unusual attractions that the city of Umeå takes pride in. Located in an 1861 building, this structure is a living architectural monument and the oldest stone house in the county, having survived a devastating fire in the century before last.

Today, within the walls of this former prison in Sweden, lies a cozy hotel where former cells have been transformed into bright guest rooms. Despite the redevelopment, they have managed to preserve the authentic atmosphere: you will see original bars, massive doors, and even an old church pulpit. It is a unique example of how a site with a stern history can become a friendly space for travelers.

The complex includes 23 rooms and a cozy courtyard surrounded by a one-of-a-kind wooden palisade. In the annex, which once housed the courtroom, the Zillers brasserie is now open, offering German-style dishes. This place is perfect for those seeking not just a place to sleep, but a true immersion into history with a light touch of mystery.

What to Do

The main reason visitors come here is the opportunity to feel the spirit of the time. Be sure to stop by the small museum room located at the end of the corridor on the first floor. It houses archival materials and exhibits that tell the story of the prisoners' daily lives and the history of the building itself. Look out for the ghostly drawings on the walls and the preserved chains at the entrance—these details create a unique character.

Take a walk through the inner courtyard, where the exercise yard once was. The unique wooden palisade has been preserved here—a rare architectural element for modern Sweden. It is a great spot for atmospheric photos, especially against the backdrop of the prison block's thick brick walls.

To round off your visit, head to the Zillers brasserie. While enjoying dinner in the former courtroom, you can reflect on how much the purpose of this building has changed over a century and a half. Thanks to its proximity to the city center, a visit to the "Old Jail" is easily combined with a stroll along the waterfront or a visit to local museums.

Getting There

The attraction is located at Storgatan 62, which is essentially the heart of the city. If you are already in the center, a walk to the building will take no more than 10 minutes from the main square. From the central railway station, the walk is about 15–20 minutes, but you can also use local buses that run regularly along the adjacent streets.

For those arriving from the airport, it is most convenient to book a taxi or take a shuttle bus. The trip takes about 20 minutes (the distance is approximately 10–15 km). If you are traveling by car, city parking is available near the site, though a stroll through the historical quarters will allow you to better experience the local atmosphere.

History & Facts

The prison building in Umeå was erected in 1861 according to the design of architect Wilhelm Theodor Anckarsvärd. Construction was part of a large-scale reform inspired by the American "Philadelphia System." The main idea was to replace common halls with individual cells where prisoners could reflect on their actions in silence and daylight.

This structure went down in history as the city's oldest stone building. It miraculously managed to survive the Great Fire of 1888, which destroyed most of the wooden buildings. The brick facades and the unique wooden palisade (fence) surrounding the area have been preserved almost in their original form to this day, leading the site to be designated a national architectural monument in 1992.

The building served its prison functions until 1981. After the correctional facility closed, it found a home for the theatrical bohemia: in the 80s, avant-garde productions were held in the former cells and the courtyard. It wasn't until 2007–2008, after a thorough renovation, that a hotel opened here, carefully preserving the historical heritage for future generations of travelers.

Time Needed

If you plan to visit this place only as a curious traveler, 1–2 hours will be quite enough. This is sufficient time to admire the building's architecture, peek into the museum room on the first floor, and walk along the preserved wooden palisade in the courtyard.

For those who want to dive deeper into the atmosphere, it's worth setting aside half a day. This will allow you not only to study the history but also to have a leisurely lunch at the local brasserie. Of course, the full experience of "incarceration" is only available to those who decide to stay the night, choosing one of the former cells as their hotel room.

Working Hours

For visitors wishing to view the building or visit the museum exhibition, the doors are usually open throughout the day. Traditional opening hours are: Monday–Friday from 07:00 to 20:00, and on Saturday and Sunday from 08:00 to 18:00.

Since the site functions as an active hotel, access to guest corridors may be restricted. We recommend checking the official website or contacting the administration beforehand to clarify the possibility of a tour or a visit to the brasserie.
