Built in the 1260s at the initiative of Duke Peter II of Savoy, the castle served as both a defensive outpost and a luxurious residence. Today, its walls no longer intimidate enemies but instead warmly welcome culture enthusiasts. Inside the fortress is the Museum of Yverdon and the Region, considered one of the oldest and most significant museum spaces in the Canton of Vaud.

Visitors can expect an incredible journey through 6,000 years of history. The museum's collections include rare archaeological finds, such as Gallo-Roman canoes, an ancient Egyptian mummy, and exquisite collections of historical costumes. This is a place where medieval architecture meets a rich cultural heritage spanning eras from the Neolithic to the present day.

What to Do

The main draw for visitors is the Museum of Yverdon and the Region, which occupies several floors of the fortress. Start your exploration on the second floor, where archaeological treasures spanning thousands of years are presented, and then descend into the vaulted cellar. There, unique ancient boats await, recalling the region's storied seafaring past, along with a collection of medieval weapons and torture instruments.

Be sure to notice the castle's connection to the great educator Johann Pestalozzi — here you can learn about his innovative teaching methods. For fans of unusual exhibits, the vintage car exhibition is a pleasant surprise, featuring a luxury vehicle once owned by the legendary actress Greta Garbo. Fashion lovers will appreciate the temporary exhibitions of the Swiss Fashion Museum, which are often held in the castle halls.

If you want to broaden your horizons, take advantage of the combined ticket, which also opens the doors to Maison d'Ailleurs — Europe's first science fiction museum, located nearby. After touring the interior, stroll through the courtyard to admire the massive towers, then head for a walk through the Old Town or to the shores of Lake Neuchâtel to end the day in the fresh air.

Getting There

The castle is located in the heart of the historic center at Le Château, 1400 Yverdon-les-Bains. Thanks to its central location, it is only a 10-minute leisurely walk from the railway station, making it very accessible for travelers using the excellent Swiss SBB train system.

If you are traveling from other cities, the train journey from Lausanne takes about 30–40 minutes, and from Geneva, about an hour. For those arriving by car, take the A9 highway (Yverdon-les-Bains exit). City parking is available in the immediate vicinity of the fortress walls.

In the warmer months, many tourists prefer to reach the castle by bicycle or on foot from the shores of Lake Neuchâtel (about 1 km away). A stroll through the picturesque streets of the Old Town toward the monumental towers is a great way to start your introduction to the local architecture.

History & Facts

The history of this site dates back to antiquity. The modern castle was built between 1260 and 1270 by order of Duke Peter II of Savoy. The fortress was constructed on the site of the ancient settlement of Eburodunum, which translates to "Fortress of the Yew Tree," to control a vital trade hub at the crossroads between France, Germany, and Italy.

In the 16th century, the region's landscape changed: in 1536, the castle came under the rule of Bern. For centuries, it served as the residence of Bernese bailiffs until the building became municipal property at the end of the 18th century. An interesting turn in the fortress's history occurred in the 19th century when its stern halls were transformed into a pioneering educational center.

From 1805 to 1825, the famous humanist educator Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi operated his institute within the castle walls. Inspired by Rousseau's ideas, his school became famous throughout Europe, teaching children from all walks of life, many of whom became prominent figures. Museum activities began in the castle as early as 1830, harmoniously coexisting with classrooms until 1974.

Time Needed

To explore all levels of the castle at a leisurely pace and immerse yourself in the region's history, we recommend allowing 2 to 3 hours. This is enough time to see the main exhibition of the Museum of Yverdon and visit the atmospheric vaulted cellar.

If you also plan to visit temporary exhibitions or combine your visit with a trip to nearby cultural centers, it is better to set aside half a day. Keep in mind that the castle is situated in a picturesque location, and you will likely want to spend an extra half hour taking photos in the courtyard and walking through the adjacent squares.
