How to get to Chiayi

You can reach Chiayi in various ways: the region boasts excellent transport accessibility thanks to a high-speed rail station, local railway lines, and its proximity to the island's major transport hubs.

Although Chiayi possesses its own small airport (CYI), it services a limited number of domestic flights, primarily from the islands. Most international travellers arrive at major aviation hubs in neighbouring cities, from where it is easy to continue the journey by land.

Convenient arrival points include the airport in the city of Tainan (about 58 km away) or the international airport in Taichung, located 79 km to the north. You may also consider flying via Magong if you are travelling from the Penghu archipelago, though this will require an additional connection.

The railway is one of the most popular ways to get to Chiayi, as the city is a major hub with two key stations: the regular train station (TRA) in the city centre and the High Speed Rail station (THSR) on the outskirts. This allows for quick and comfortable travel here from any part of Taiwan.

Regular services connect the city with its neighbours: a trip from the city of Tainan or the metropolis of Taichung takes minimal time. High-speed express trains are renowned for their punctuality, making the journey tireless and pleasant.

Travelling by private car or taxi provides maximum flexibility in planning your route. The drive to Chiayi from the neighbouring city of Tainan (about 69 km) will take just 1 hour with light traffic.

The journey from Taichung, a distance of nearly 99 km, will require about 1.4 hours. It is worth noting that a trip from the direction of Magong (over 250 km including the sea) is extremely long and involves the use of ferries.
