What to Do

A visit to the "General House" is primarily a journey into the past through the details of everyday life. You can explore the authentic interiors of the former barracks, which display household items, military documents, and rare photographs. Of particular interest are the exhibits dedicated to the period of Japanese rule: they allow you to literally touch history through the vintage items that surrounded people decades ago.

In addition to the museum section, a unique library operates here. It is the perfect spot for those who want to study materials on local architecture and culture in silence. Visitors often spend time reading books, enjoying the atmosphere of tranquility and intellectual comfort. Don't forget to look for the interactive elements that vividly tell the story of the city's development and transformation.

For lovers of aesthetics, this is a wonderful location for photoshoots — the combination of wood, old masonry, and soft light creates magnificent shots. After exploring the house, we recommend walking through the adjacent streets, where you can find traditional Taiwanese snacks and fresh tropical fruits to top off your stroll through southern Taiwan.

Getting There

The attraction is located at No. 106, Qingdao St. If you are arriving from other regions, it is most convenient to fly into Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH). From there, you can take the THSR high-speed train to Zuoying Station (about a 20-minute ride), and then transfer to a bus or taxi, which will take another 30–40 minutes. The total journey from the airport is approximately 1.5 hours.

Within the city itself, the most comfortable way to get around is by local buses (for example, routes 9189 or 9202). If you prefer a taxi, the ride from Pingtung Railway Station takes only 5–10 minutes and costs about 100–200 TWD.

For those who enjoy walking, the route from the city center takes about 20–30 minutes. The city is also cyclist-friendly, with convenient paths nearby and car parking spaces available next to the building.

History & Facts

The history of this place is inextricably linked to the period of Japanese rule on the island (1895–1945). Originally, the building was constructed as military barracks, which left an imprint on its austere yet functional appearance. The house's architecture is a classic example of the colonial influence of that era, combining Japanese traditions with adaptations to the local climate.

One of the notable features of the building is the Overhanging Gable (悬山顶) roof style, which was widespread in Japanese architecture of that period. The building served as an important element of the military infrastructure in the southern region, reflecting the stages of the city's development and its gradual transformation under the influence of various cultural trends.

Following the end of the occupation period, the "General House" changed its purpose. Instead of soldiers, it became home to books and historical relics. Today, it symbolizes a peaceful transition from a militaristic past to an educational and cultural future. Restoration has preserved authentic Min Nan style elements, harmoniously intertwined with Japanese innovations from the early 20th century.

Time Needed

To explore the main exhibition and browse the library collection at a leisurely pace, most tourists find 1–2 hours sufficient. This is enough time to study the historical artifacts, take high-quality photos, and soak in the atmosphere of the historic building.

Typically, about 30–45 minutes are spent touring the exhibition halls, while the remaining time is spent by visitors reading archival materials or relaxing in the cozy environment of the cultural center. If you plan to study the documents in detail, your visit may take a bit longer.
