Boting Art Center

About

In the very heart of Taitung lies a marvelous oasis of tranquility and art — the Baoting Art Center. This site is an architectural ensemble of four historic wooden houses built in the classical Japanese style. Once serving as official residences, these buildings have been transformed into a modern cultural venue where history meets creativity.

What to Do

Exploring the center should begin with a walk through its grounds to appreciate the elegance of Japanese architecture. The carefully restored wooden houses, with their characteristic roofs and sliding doors, serve as a perfect backdrop for atmospheric photos. The absence of external walls creates a sense of freedom and allows for a smooth transition from the city rhythm to the serenity of the art space.

Inside the buildings, static exhibitions are held regularly. Here, you can see works by contemporary Taiwanese painters, sculptors, and masters of decorative arts. Special attention is given to traditional indigenous crafts: the displays often feature unique textiles, wood carvings, and weaving that reflect the lifestyle of the Amis and Puyuma tribes.

If you're lucky, you might catch a lecture, a creative meeting, or a live artistic performance. During the warmer months, workshops are sometimes held in the center's open areas, where you can try your hand at creating traditional souvenirs under the guidance of experienced artisans. This place is ideal for those seeking a quiet cultural experience away from the bustle of noisy markets.

Getting There

Finding this cozy cultural corner in the city is quite simple: it is located at 182 Zhongshan Road. Thanks to its central location, the art center is easily accessible on foot from most parts of central Taitung.

If you are further from the center, it is most convenient to take a taxi or rent a scooter — the most popular and fastest way to get around town; the ride from the railway station takes no more than 10 minutes. You can also take local buses to the Taitung central bus station, from where the Baoting Art Center is just a few blocks away.

The area surrounding the center is very pleasant for walking. Nearby, you will find other cultural sites, such as the Railway Art Village, so a visit to Baoting can easily be combined with a walking tour of the city's key landmarks.

History & Facts

The name "Baoting" is the old designation for the area where the center is located today. The buildings themselves have a rich history: they were constructed during the period of Japanese rule and were originally intended for high-ranking officials. The official residence of the mayor and dormitories for city hall staff were once located here.

For a long time, the structures were in a state of neglect, but in 2000, a large-scale reconstruction began at the initiative of the county administration. To ensure architectural accuracy, Japanese carpenters were brought in to help restore the original appearance of the wooden structures using traditional construction methods.

A unique decision during the restoration was the removal of the external concrete walls that once enclosed the territory. This was done to blur the boundaries between the historical site and the modern city, turning what was once a closed residence into an open public space. Today, the center serves as a living bridge between the past and the present, uniting Japanese aesthetics, Han culture, and the heritage of the Puyuma and Amis indigenous peoples within its walls.

Time Needed

When planning your itinerary, set aside 1 to 2 hours to explore the art center. This is quite enough time to leisurely stroll through the grounds, admire the details of the Japanese architecture from the outside, and step inside the buildings to see the current exhibitions.

If you happen to catch one of the special events, such as a traditional crafts workshop or a cultural performance, your visit may last up to 3 hours. The venue encourages contemplation and relaxation, making it a pleasant place to spend time without any rush.
