About

On the picturesque Fenggui Peninsula, which guards the entrance to the bay of Magong, lies the Shetoushan Recreation Area. This amazing place got its name from its distinctive terrain: the mountain's silhouette resembles a snake's head lurking at the water's edge. The attraction is included in the list of the 100 minor peaks of Taiwan and serves as a vital geographical landmark for sailors.

Local folklore gives this place a special mystical role. It is believed that the "Snake Head" of Shetoushan and the "Golden Turtle" peninsula located opposite act as spiritual guardians of the harbor. This unique blend of natural beauty and ancient legends makes the area attractive for both landscape walkers and those seeking cultural context.

Today, the territory is a well-maintained space where natural rock formations harmoniously coexist with historical ruins. Due to its location, Shetoushan remains one of the best vantage points for observing ship movement and the life of Magong port.

History & Facts

The history of this site dates back to 1622, when Dutch traders seeking a base for their operations in East Asia landed on the shore and built Taiwan's first Western-style castle on the summit of Shetoushan. This turned the mountain into a crucial strategic point, allowing control over the only entrance to the deep-water harbor.

In the following centuries, the strategic importance of the height only grew. Various rulers and colonial powers erected cannon batteries and defensive ramparts here. Today, among the dense vegetation, you can still find ruins of old fortifications, bearing witness to the region's turbulent military past.

In addition to the fortifications, unique historical artifacts remain on the site, such as a monument to fallen French soldiers. These features make Shetoushan not just a nature park, but a true open-air museum, preserving the memory of international competition for control over sea routes.

Time Needed

A full visit to the Shetoushan Recreation Area usually takes 1 to 2 hours. This time is quite sufficient to leisurely walk the trails, climb to the summit for the panoramic view, and explore the preserved historical monuments.

If you plan to engage in professional landscape photography or want to spend time in solitude enjoying the sea breeze, it's worth setting aside a bit more time. This place invites quiet contemplation, especially during sunset hours.

Working Hours

Shetoushan Recreation Area is open to visitors 24/7. You can come here at any convenient time—from early morning to catch the sunrise to late evening when the city lights are beautifully reflected in the water.
