Located in picturesque Taiwan, the museum draws attention with its minimalist architecture and profound content.

This facility is a vital link in preserving the region's cultural identity. What to Do

Within the halls of the Taitung Art Museum, visitors will encounter fascinating artifacts from the past and works by contemporary masters. Be sure to notice the collection of slate coffins—silent witnesses to ancient rituals found at the Beinan Neolithic site. These finds offer a glimpse into the daily lives of people who lived here thousands of years ago.

The exhibition includes tens of thousands of items: from exquisite jewelry to stone tools. Interactive elements and detailed dioramas help visualize what Taiwan looked like during the Neolithic era. This site will be of interest not only to history buffs but also to anyone who appreciates the aesthetics of ancient forms and materials.

After exploring the indoor galleries, it's worth heading to the adjacent Beinan Cultural Park. Spanning approximately ten hectares, this open-air archaeological zone recreates the context of ancient settlements at the actual excavation site. A walk through the park is a perfect way to end your visit, allowing you to enjoy nature and appreciate the scale of the historical layers discovered here.

Getting There

Reaching this cultural landmark is quite easy. The Taitung Art Museum is located in the city of Taitung at No. 350, Zhejiang Rd. Thanks to the city's well-developed infrastructure, travelers can choose from several modes of transport.

If you arrive at Taitung Railway Station, the journey to the museum takes very little time. While the National Museum of Prehistory is just a five-minute walk from the station along Boguan Road, the Art Museum on Zhejiang Road is most conveniently reached by taxi or local bus. A taxi ride from the city center will take about 10–15 minutes.

For those who prefer public transport, city buses connect the main transport hubs toward the museum. A walk from the nearest stops will allow you to get a better look at the cozy streets and soak up the atmosphere of this coastal region.

History & Facts

The history of museum work in this region is inextricably linked to a monumental archaeological discovery. In 1980, during the construction of the South-Link Line of the Taiwan Railway, workers stumbled upon ancient artifacts of the Beinan Neolithic culture. The name of this culture comes from a local word meaning "Puyuma."

The discovery of unique slate coffins caused such a public outcry that the construction of the railway station was suspended at the request of the city government. Over the following ten years, a team of experts from National Taiwan University conducted extensive excavations covering an area of about ten hectares.

The results exceeded all expectations: more than 1,500 burials and tens of thousands of everyday items were found, making this site the most significant Middle Neolithic monument on the island. This heritage laid the foundation for the creation of major cultural institutions in the region, including modern art and history venues.

The official opening of the museum, designed to preserve and showcase this wealth, took place on August 17, 2002. Since then, it has served as the primary educational and scientific center, introducing the world to the deep historical roots of the east coast.

To explore the exhibits at a leisurely pace, see the temporary exhibitions, and stroll through the surrounding grounds, we recommend setting aside 1.5 to 3 hours. This is plenty of time for thoughtful contemplation of the art and studying the information panels.
