The region's main air hub is Taichung International Airport (RMQ), receiving flights from many Asian cities and ensuring connections with the outside world. Taichung Airport (TXG) also appears in transport lists, however, most modern routes are served by the international terminal.
If there are no direct flights, you can fly to neighbouring cities. The nearest alternative is Chiayi, located 79 km away, or Hualien on the east coast (96 km), from where it is easy to continue the journey by land transport.

Rail travel is one of the most popular ways to get to Taichung, as the city is a major transport hub with a station in the centre and a High Speed Rail (HSR) station on the outskirts. A modern railway network connects the metropolis with almost every corner of the island of Taiwan.
Travellers often arrive here from the city of Chiayi (about 79 km), which takes very little time. A route from the east coast is also available, for example from the city of Hualien, although the trip across the mountain range will take longer, it will offer unforgettable views.

By Bus
Intercity buses offer a budget-friendly and scenic travel option. Regular services depart from the city of Chiayi; the bus covers the distance of 100 km in an average of 2.3 hours, ensuring a comfortable journey.
For those travelling from the east coast, for example from the city of Hualien, the road will be longer and take about 5.9 hours (319 km). This route passes through challenging mountain sections, revealing impressive panoramas of the central range to passengers.
By Car
Travelling by car gives freedom in choosing stops and the pace of the trip. The fastest route runs from the city of Chiayi: a distance of about 98 km can be covered in just 1.4 hours via the expressway.
A trip from the city of Hualien will take around 4.5 hours (311 km). The road through the central part of the island of Taiwan can be winding, but it rewards drivers and passengers with magnificent views of nature.

To make your stay in the city of Taichung as pleasant as possible, we have prepared some useful recommendations. A little preparation will help avoid common mistakes and allow you to enjoy the local atmosphere.
- Clothing and Climate. It is warm and humid here for most of the year. Bring light clothing made of natural fabrics, but be sure to pack a raincoat or umbrella, as sudden downpours are not uncommon. A light jacket will be useful for air-conditioned rooms and transport.
- Transport and EasyCard. Buy an EasyCard or iPass immediately upon arrival. This city has a unique system: bus travel is often free for distances up to 10 km when using the card.
- Finances. The official currency is the New Taiwan Dollar (TWD). Cards are accepted in shopping centres, but always carry small denomination cash for night markets and street food stalls.
- Health. The sun is very active here, so SPF cream is mandatory. It is also recommended to use mosquito repellents, especially if you plan to visit parks or nature areas in the evening.
- Language. Many signs are duplicated in English, but taxi drivers and market vendors may only speak Chinese. Have the name of your hotel or attraction written in characters with you.
- Etiquette. Taiwanese people are very polite and value respect. It is not customary to talk loudly on the phone in public transport, and one should remove hats when visiting temples.
- Road Safety. Beware of scooters, which can appear unexpectedly even on sidewalks. Be attentive when crossing the road and always look around.
- Gastronomic Experience. Do not leave without trying authentic Bubble Tea. This city is considered the birthplace of the famous tea with pearls, and the original tea house where it was invented is located here.
