How to get to Tainan

Getting There: Introduction

When planning a trip to Taiwan, it is impossible to overlook Tainan — the island's oldest city and its acknowledged cultural capital, situated on the south-western coast. This vibrant metropolis attracts tourists with its ancient temples, renowned street food, and a relaxed atmosphere that differs from the bustle of the capital. You can reach this destination in a variety of ways: from a direct flight to a comfortable journey by high-speed train or car.

By Plane

The fastest way to reach the city is to take a flight to Tainan Airport (TNN). This regional aviation hub is located close to the centre and handles both domestic and select international flights, providing convenient access to attractions immediately upon arrival.

If direct tickets are unavailable, an excellent alternative is flying into neighbouring Kaohsiung, where the major international airport is located just 42 km from the city. You may also consider arriving in the city of Chiayi (58 km) or even the archipelago of Magong (92 km), although the latter option will require a subsequent transfer to another mode of transport.

A train journey from the neighbouring city of Kaohsiung (42 km) takes minimal time, making this route ideal for short visits. It is also easy to get there from the city of Chiayi (58 km) or from the north of the island, while enjoying picturesque views from the window.

Travel Tips

To ensure your stay in the city of Tainan is as comfortable as possible and leaves only warm memories, make use of these proven recommendations.

  1. Clothing and Essentials. The climate here is hot and humid for most of the year. Bring loose clothing made of natural fabrics, sunglasses, and certainly comfortable footwear for long walks around the temples.
  2. Transport. The historical centre can be explored on foot, but for longer distances, it is most convenient to use a taxi or rent a scooter (if you possess an international driving licence). Local buses operate, but the schedule can be complex for a tourist.
  3. Finances. The currency is the New Taiwan Dollar (TWD). Major hotels accept cards, but at the famous night markets and street cafes, you will need cash.
  4. Health and Safety. The city is safe, but mosquitoes are active in summer. Be sure to use repellents to avoid bites. Drink only bottled water.
  5. Communication. The official language is Chinese (Mandarin), though locals often speak Taiwanese Hokkien. Young people and hotel staff usually understand basic English, but an online translator on your phone will be indispensable.
  6. Local Etiquette. Upon entering private homes and many temples, it is customary to remove one's shoes. Present and receive business cards or money with two hands as a sign of respect.
  7. What to Avoid. Do not leave chopsticks sticking vertically into rice — this is associated with memorial rites. Also, try not to raise your voice in public places.
  8. Additional Tip. Tainan is a gastronomic capital. Do not be afraid to try street food: the local beef soup and "coffin bread" (a deep-fried sandwich) are considered delicacies, for which people travel here from all over the island.

Observing these simple rules will help you adapt faster and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the ancient capital.
