General Weather Overview

Taipei's climate can be described as humid subtropical. This means the city enjoys mild, relatively short winters and long, hot, and humid summers. The weather in Taipei is influenced by monsoons, which affect humidity levels and rainfall distribution throughout the year. Temperature fluctuations between seasons are noticeable, but severe frosts or stifling heat are quite rare here.

Four distinct seasons are clearly defined in Taipei. Winter (from December to February) is usually mild, with average temperatures around 15-17°C. Spring (from March to May) brings gradual warming, and by May, the average temperature rises to a comfortable 24-25°C. Summer, which lasts from June to August, is the hottest period with average temperatures of 27-28°C and high humidity. Autumn (from September to November) delights with a gradual decrease in temperature from approximately 26°C in September to a pleasant 20-21°C in November, making this time of year particularly attractive for visiting the city.

A characteristic feature of the weather in Taipei is the significant number of days with precipitation throughout the year — from 15 to 21 "wet days" monthly. However, the total rainfall in millimetres is not always very high, which may indicate frequent but not overly intense rains or drizzle. The highest amount of rainfall in millimetres usually occurs from May to November, reaching a maximum in October. Therefore, when planning a trip to Taipei, do not forget to take an umbrella or a light raincoat to be ready for the changeable weather.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Taipei is characterized by noticeable seasonal changes, but without extreme cold or exhausting heat. The annual range of average temperatures fluctuates from approximately 15.4°C in January to 28.4°C in July. The hottest months are traditionally July and August, when the average maximum temperature rises above 30°C. January and February are considered the coolest, with average temperatures around 15-16°C, while minimum temperatures can drop to 13-14°C.

The summer months in Taipei, from June to August, bring hot and, as a rule, humid weather. Daily average temperatures during this period confidently stay in the range of 26.9-28.4°C. Daytime highs often reach and exceed 30°C (for example, 30.9°C in July), and nighttime lows rarely drop below 24-26°C. Winter, covering December, January, and February, is, on the contrary, mild and cool. Average temperatures in the winter months range from 15.4°C to 16.6°C. At night, the temperature can drop to 13.6-15.1°C, while during the day the air warms up on average to 17.3-18.3°C, creating comfortable conditions for walking.

Daily temperature fluctuations in Taipei are generally moderate. For instance, in January, the difference between the average maximum (17.3°C) and average minimum (13.6°C) temperature is about 3.7°C, while in July this figure reaches 5°C (30.9°C versus 25.9°C). Transitional seasons also demonstrate characteristic temperature features: in spring, from March to May, there is a smooth rise in temperature from an average of 18.5°C to 24.5°C. In autumn, from September to November, the temperature gradually decreases from 26.5°C to a comfortable 20.7°C, making these periods attractive for visiting the city.

Precipitation

In Taipei, precipitation is a frequent occurrence throughout the year, and a classic dry season, when there is practically no rain, is not observed here. The number of "wet days" ranges from 15 in March and April to 21 days in December, which means a high probability of encountering rain in practically any month. However, the intensity and total amount of precipitation vary noticeably depending on the time of year.

The most intense precipitation, judging by the monthly average volume, is characteristic of the period from May to October. The absolute leader in rainfall is October, when an average of 9 mm falls, with about 20 rainy days recorded. June and September are also quite wet months, where the average rainfall reaches 7 mm, and the number of rainy days is 20 and 19 respectively. Given the warm temperatures in the summer and early autumn months, precipitation at this time can take the form of intense but short-lived downpours.

The period from January to April can be described as relatively "dry" in terms of total rainfall volume, which varies from 3 to 4 mm per month. Thus, in January, March, and April, the least amount of precipitation falls – only 3 mm each. Nevertheless, even in these months, it rains quite often: for example, in March and April there are about 15 rainy days, and in January – as many as 18. December stands out particularly, having the highest number of days with precipitation (on average 21 days), but with a moderate volume of rainfall (5 mm). This may indicate frequent but not too heavy rains or prolonged drizzle, characteristic of cooler weather. Snow is atypical for Taipei.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Taipei, it is important to consider its humid subtropical climate with frequent precipitation throughout the year. Indispensable companions on your journey will be comfortable shoes for long walks around the city and a compact umbrella or a light raincoat, as even in months with lower rainfall volume, the number of rainy days remains high (from 15 to 21 days monthly). Do not forget sunscreen as well, especially if you are planning a trip during the warm season, and an adapter for electronics if necessary.

For visiting Taipei during the cooler months, roughly from December to March, when average temperatures range from 15°C to 18.5°C, it is recommended to bring layered clothing. A light jacket or windbreaker (preferably waterproof due to frequent rain), a sweater or fleece top, long-sleeved t-shirts, and comfortable trousers will help you feel comfortable. Although severe cold does not occur, evenings can be fresh, especially considering the humidity and possible wind. The layering principle will allow you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day and when moving between the outdoors and air-conditioned premises.

In the warm season, from May to October, when hot and humid weather sets in Taipei with average temperatures from 23°C to 28°C and above, preference should be given to light and breathable clothing made from natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen. T-shirts, shorts, skirts, and light dresses will be most appropriate. Do not forget a hat and sunglasses for sun protection. During this period, a light raincoat or umbrella is also particularly relevant, as the months from May to November, especially October, June, and September, are characterized by the highest amount of precipitation. Regardless of the season, having a spare pair of shoes may prove useful due to the high probability of rain.
