How to get to Mae Sot

Getting There: Introduction

Located in the west of the country right on the border with Myanmar, Mae Sot is a colourful trading hub where Thai and Burmese cultures blend fascinatingly. You can reach this distinctive city in various ways: by a direct flight, a scenic bus route through mountain passes, or by rented car. A journey to this region promises immersion in the authentic atmosphere of border life, far removed from standard tourist trails.

By Plane

The fastest and most comfortable way to reach the city is via the local Mae Sot Airport (MAQ). This aviation hub receives regular domestic flights, ensuring convenient connections with other parts of the country and allowing travellers to save time travelling across mountain ranges.

Alternatively, if direct tickets are unavailable, you may consider flying to neighbouring provinces, such as Sukhothai or Phitsanulok. From these cities, you will need to travel several hours by land to reach the final destination, but such combined routes often open up more opportunities to explore the region.

By Train

There is no direct railway connection to the city of Mae Sot, as the complex mountainous terrain prevented tracks from being laid directly to the border. Train enthusiasts are recommended to buy a ticket to the nearest major transport hub — the station in Phitsanulok, located approximately 180 kilometres away.

Another convenient option would be a trip to Lampang station, from where you can continue your journey by bus or taxi. Despite the need for a transfer, rail travel in northern Thailand remains popular due to the scenic views and the comfort of modern carriages.

The city has no major railway stations. Nearest cities with rail connections:

By Bus

Bus service is one of the most popular ways to get to Mae Sot thanks to a developed network of routes and affordable prices. Regular services depart from both Bangkok (most often from the northern Mo Chit terminal) and neighbouring provincial centres, offering tourists a choice between budget options and comfortable VIP buses.

The bus journey passes through picturesque winding mountain roads, making the trip visually breathtaking, although it may take longer compared to flying. Travellers should note that traffic on mountain sections can be slow, so it is best to allow extra time for the journey.

By Car

Travelling by car offers freedom of movement and the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Thanon Thong Chai mountain range at your own pace. One of the most convenient routes is considered the road from Sukhothai: a journey of about 168 km will take approximately 2.7 hours and passes through dense forests and winding roads.

If you are departing from Phitsanulok, expect a trip covering 226 km, which will last about 3.5 hours. Travellers starting from Lampang will have to cover 268 km, requiring about 3.9 hours of careful driving on mountain roads.

Travel Tips

Visiting the border city of Mae Sot is a unique experience of immersing yourself in a multicultural environment. To ensure your journey is as comfortable and safe as possible, we have prepared several important recommendations.

  1. Clothing and Climate. It can be hotter here than in other regions, so choose modest, light clothing made from natural fabrics. However, for evenings and trips to the mountains, be sure to bring a light jacket or sweater.
  2. Transport in the City. The main mode of transport is songthaews (pickup trucks used as shared taxis) and motorcycle taxis. It is best to agree on the price with tuk-tuk drivers in advance, before boarding.
  3. Finances and Cash. The official currency is the Thai Baht. Although major hotels accept cards, you will need cash for local markets and street cafes. Exchange offices are available in the city centre and near the border.
  4. Health. As this is a tropical border zone, it is recommended to use mosquito repellent, especially in the evening. Drink only bottled water.
  5. Language and Communication. Locals speak a mix of Thai and Burmese. English is understood in hotels and tourist spots, but learning a few phrases in Thai will earn you special respect.
  6. Local Etiquette. Be sure to remove your shoes when entering temples and private homes. Avoid touching the heads of locals and do not point at people or objects with your foot — this is considered rude.
  7. What to Avoid. Do not attempt to cross the border into Myanmar in unauthorized places or without appropriate documents. Also, refrain from photographing military facilities and border guards.
  8. Shopping at the Border. Be sure to visit the Rim Moei market on the riverbank — here you can find unique goods from Myanmar, precious stones, and souvenirs at very low prices.

Following these simple rules will help you avoid misunderstandings and fully enjoy the unique atmosphere of this exceptional corner of Thailand.
