History & Facts

The man honored by this monument, Phraya Ratsadanupradit Mahisara Phakdi (born Khaw Sim Bee), was a truly legendary figure. Born into a Chinese merchant family, he rose to become one of the most distinguished administrators Thailand has ever seen. He was appointed governor of the province in 1890, and from that moment, the region began to change rapidly.

It was thanks to his foresight that the first rubber tree (Hevea) was introduced to Trang, having been brought secretly from Malaya. This decision forever changed the economy of the country's south, turning rubber into one of the primary export crops. In addition to agricultural reforms, the governor actively built roads connecting the province with its neighbors and initiated the creation of one of the first railways in the kingdom.

Khaw Sim Bee's merits were so great that King Rama V Chulalongkorn called him the most successful governor of the decade. His successor, King Rama VI, not only considered him a close friend but also granted him the highest title and the Order of the White Elephant. Today, the monument serves as a reminder of how one energetic leader can shape the prosperity of an entire region for a century to come.
