Overview

The climate in Rize is best described as moderately warm and very humid, with characteristics of a humid subtropical marine climate. The city is known for its high rainfall throughout the year, which sustains the region's lush green vegetation. Temperature variations between seasons are distinct, but without extreme peaks of heat or cold.

Rize experiences four distinct seasons. Winters (December–February) are cool, with average temperatures around 6–8°C, and quite rainy. Spring (March–May) brings gradual warming, with average temperatures rising from 6–7°C to 14–15°C, while rainfall remains significant. Summer (June–August) is warm and very humid; average temperatures hover around 19–22°C, with July and August being the months with the highest number of rainy days—which may be unexpected for those anticipating a dry summer holiday. Autumn (September–November) is also rainy, with temperatures gradually decreasing from 19°C to 11°C. A characteristic feature of the weather in Rize is the high number of overcast and rainy days year-round, so an umbrella and waterproof clothing will be your constant companions.

Temperature

The climate in Rize is characterized by moderate temperatures throughout the year, without sharp extremes. The hottest month is usually August, when the average temperature reaches 22.0°C, with maximum daytime temperatures rising to 23.8°C and nighttime lows dropping to 20.2°C. July is also very warm, with an average temperature of 21.1°C. The coldest months are January and February, when the average temperature stays around 6.1°C. In January, the average minimum is 3.5°C and the maximum is 8.6°C.

The summer months in Rize, from June to August, offer pleasant warmth. Average maximum temperatures range from 21.4°C in June to 23.8°C in August. Nights also remain warm, with minimum temperatures between 17.0°C and 20.2°C. The difference between day and night temperatures in summer is not very large, creating comfortable conditions. Winter, from December to March, is quite mild and cool. Average minimum winter temperatures vary from 3.5°C in January to 5.6°C in December, while average maximums range from 8.5°C in February to 11.2°C in December. Frosts do occur, but severe and prolonged cold spells are not typical for this region.

The transitional seasons, spring and autumn, show a gradual change in temperatures. In April, the average temperature is 11.2°C, and by May it reaches 14.6°C, heralding the summer warmth. In autumn, the temperature gradually declines: in September, the average temperature is 19.6°C, in October it is 15.8°C, and by November it drops to 11.7°C. Overall, the annual temperature cycle in Rize is notable for its lack of sudden jumps, and diurnal temperature fluctuations (the difference between the maximum and minimum temperature during the day) remain moderate throughout the year, typically ranging from 3.6°C to 5.7°C.

Precipitation

In Rize, precipitation is a frequent occurrence throughout the year, which defines the city's humid climate. Travelers should be prepared for rain in almost any season, as the number of rainy days varies from 13 in April to 23 in August. This means that even during the "driest" months, the likelihood of encountering rainy weather remains significant.

Regarding the amount of precipitation, the wettest months in terms of volume are September and October, when an average of 8 mm is recorded. However, August leads in terms of frequency, with about 23 rainy days. The "driest" month is considered to be April: during this time, only about 3 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of rainy days is at its annual minimum—approximately 13.

Given the relatively small average monthly volumes of precipitation alongside a high number of rainy days, it can be inferred that Rize is characterized by frequent but mostly light or moderate rain, often in the form of drizzle. Winter temperatures generally stay above freezing, so the primary form of precipitation is rain. There is no clearly defined dry season in Rize; rather, there is a constant probability of precipitation throughout the year. August stands out for the highest number of rainy days, while September and October see the highest volume of rainfall.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Rize, it is essential to consider its humid climate and frequent precipitation throughout the year. Regardless of the season, your suitcase should definitely include a waterproof jacket and/or a sturdy umbrella, as well as comfortable waterproof shoes for walking, as rainy days are frequent here. Dressing in layers will be your best friend, allowing you to adapt to temperature changes throughout the day.

In the summer months (June–August), when average temperatures range between 19–22°C, lightweight clothing such as T-shirts, shorts, skirts, and light trousers is appropriate. However, even in summer, don't forget to pack a light sweater or cardigan for evening walks or in case of rain, which is common here. For the cooler months, especially from December to March (average temperature 6–7°C), warm items are necessary: sweaters, fleece jackets, warm trousers, a hat, gloves, and a scarf. During the shoulder seasons (April–May and September–November), the weather is changeable, so layered clothing that includes both light and warmer pieces will be the most practical choice.

In addition to clothing, don't forget sunscreen, especially if you plan to visit the mountains or the coast during the warmer months, as the sun can be strong even on cloudy days. Given the frequent rain, a quick-dry towel might also come in handy. The key is to be prepared for fickle weather and frequent showers so that nothing dampens your exploration of this picturesque region of Turkey.
