Weather Overview

The climate of Kisoro can be described as mild and temperate, distinguishing it favorably from the hot tropical lowlands. Thanks to its high-altitude location, an atmosphere of "eternal spring" reigns here: air temperature remains surprisingly stable throughout the year. Average figures hold at 18°C, while during the day the air rarely warms up above 23°C, and nights bring a pleasant, sometimes even invigorating coolness with temperatures around 14°C.

In the region's weather calendar, periods of high humidity and drier seasons are clearly defined. The most favorable time for lovers of clear skies is June and July, when the number of rainy days is minimal (only 7–8 per month). The rest of the year, especially in April and November, precipitation falls very frequently — up to 26–27 days a month can be marked by rains, so an umbrella or a raincoat will be mandatory attributes in your luggage.

For tourists, such weather means the absence of exhausting heat, which is ideal for active leisure and walking. However, it is worth being prepared for high cloudiness and frequent precipitation for most of the year. The even temperature background allows you not to worry about sharp changes between heat and cold, but a warm sweater for evening walks in Uganda will certainly be useful.

Temperature

The climate in Kisoro is distinguished by amazing stability and mildness, making this region comfortable to visit at any time of the year. Thanks to the geographical location and terrain, there is no extreme heat or severe cold here. The average monthly air temperature fluctuates in a very narrow range: from +17.7°C in November to +18.7°C in February. February is considered the warmest month, when the daytime air warms up on average to +23.2°C, creating ideal conditions for exploring the local nature.

Throughout the year, daytime figures remain pleasant and hold at the level of +21...+23°C, which can be characterized as "eternal spring". The concepts of "winter" and "summer" are quite conditional here, as the temperature background practically does not change. Even in the coolest months (November and December), it is warm and comfortable during the day. However, it is worth noting June and July: during this period, minimal precipitation falls, but nights become a little fresher, with minimum temperatures around +13.4°C.

A characteristic feature of the weather in Kisoro is a noticeable temperature drop between daylight and dark hours. If during the day the sun warms the air to a comfortable +22.5°C (for example, in May), then at night the thermometer consistently drops to +13...+14°C in any season. Such a difference of 8–9 degrees means that after a warm day, evenings bring invigorating coolness, so travelers are recommended to have light warm clothing with them for the night time.

Precipitation

The climate in this picturesque corner dictates its own rules, and travelers should be ready for frequent precipitation. Kisoro is distinguished by quite humid weather for most of the year, which is characteristic of tropical highlands. Even in relatively calm periods, rains are possible here, so a high-quality raincoat and waterproof shoes will become your best companions on the trip.

The highest probability of precipitation is observed in two distinct rainy seasons. The first peak falls in spring: the rainiest month is April, when up to 27 days with precipitation are recorded. The second wet period extends from September to December, reaching a maximum in precipitation amount in November. In these months, rains occur often, refreshing the air and maintaining the lush greenery of the region.

If you are looking for the driest period for a visit, it is worth paying attention to the middle of the year. June and July are considered the most favorable months: the number of rainy days decreases to 7–8, and the volume of precipitation becomes minimal (about 2 mm). This time is best suited for planning excursions and active leisure in nature.

What to Pack

When gathering for a journey to Kisoro, it is important to remember that the weather here remains moderately cool all year round due to the high-altitude location. During the day, the air warms up to a comfortable +22…+23°C, but nights can be quite fresh, with temperatures around +13°C. Therefore, the main principle of your wardrobe is layering. Take t-shirts and light shirts for daytime walks, but be sure to complement them with a warm sweater, fleece top, or light jacket for evenings and early mornings.

Precipitation in this region of Uganda is a frequent occurrence, especially in April, October, and November, when the number of rainy days is maximal. Even in the "dry" season (June-July), rains are not excluded. Your suitcase must contain a reliable raincoat, a waterproof windbreaker, or a high-quality poncho. Since humidity can be high, give preference to clothing made of quick-drying synthetic materials, as dense cotton will take a very long time to dry.

Pay special attention to footwear: comfortable trekking boots or sneakers with non-slip soles, preferably with a waterproof membrane, are ideal for comfortable movement. Do not forget about sun protection — despite frequent cloudiness and coolness, ultraviolet radiation is active at altitude, so sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat will be essential in any season.
