History & Facts

The history of this grand building began in 1867. Built from warm local sandstone, it immediately became an architectural landmark on the south side of Market Place. Originally designed and used as a court of law, it earned the name it has carried through the centuries.

Due to its historic and architectural significance, the site was granted Grade II listed status, marking its inclusion in the UK's list of protected architectural monuments. Some historical sources suggest a banking institution might have stood on this site as early as the 1840s, but the building took on its current appearance in the second half of the 19th century.

In later years, the sounds of the courtroom were replaced by the clink of glasses. For a long time, it housed a pub from the well-known JD Wetherspoon chain, which was very popular with locals. After its closure in the mid-2010s, the building didn't stay empty for long: in 2015, it reopened under the management of Hawthorn Leisure.

Today, the Court House is under the wing of Proper Pubs. Despite changes in ownership and function, the Victorian spirit and many original decorative elements have been preserved inside, making a simple trip to the pub a real journey into Mansfield's history.

Time Needed

When planning your visit to the Court House, you should allow approximately 1–3 hours. If you stop by during the day for a bite to eat and to admire the building's ancient architecture, one hour is plenty for a leisurely break.

An evening visit might last longer, especially if you catch one of the entertainment events like karaoke or a DJ set. During these times, guests usually spend 2–3 hours here, enjoying the company, a game of billiards, and the pub's dynamic atmosphere.

The venue opens its doors daily from 09:00 AM, making it a great spot for an early lunch or a cup of coffee. From Sunday to Thursday, the pub is open until 22:00, while on Friday and Saturday, the hours are extended until 00:00, offering more options for a night out.
