Nottingham Winter Wonderland

About

Every year with the onset of cold weather, Nottingham Winter Wonderland transforms the city's main square into a true fairytale kingdom. This large-scale Christmas festival in the city of Nottingham is rightly considered one of the brightest festive events for which Great Britain is famous. The focus is on a huge winter village with an ice rink, cozy chalets, and twinkling lights.

The main highlight of the park is the unique Sky Skate ice path, which circles the roof of the bar, offering skaters breathtaking panoramic views of the city from above. In addition, there is an Ice Bar with sculptures, the traditional Alpine-themed Sur La Piste bar, and over 60 market stalls where you can find artisan gifts and mouth-watering street food.

This place is perfect for both a romantic evening to the sounds of live music and DJ sets, and for a family holiday. Children are delighted by the Helter Skelter ride and visits to Santa Claus, while adults appreciate the apres-ski atmosphere and the opportunity to take stunning photos among the ice decorations.

What to Do

The main attraction here is, without a doubt, ice skating. You can choose the regular 200-meter rink or head up to Sky Skate — an elevated ice path where you can glide above the crowds. After some active fun, stop by the Ice Bar, where even the glasses are made of ice, or get comfortable at the Sur La Piste bar with a mug of hot cider or a cocktail accompanied by karaoke.

Shopping enthusiasts should stroll through the Alpine chalet-style market. Here you can buy unique handmade items and sample festive delicacies: churros cost around £7, and a hearty gyros is about £11.50. Be sure to ride the Observation Wheel (£8.50) to see all of festive Nottingham lit up.

For families with children, the toboggan slide and classic carousel are a must. Don't forget to visit Santa at the Magical Cabin if you're traveling in December. While entry to the park area is free, allowing you to simply enjoy a walk among the ice sculptures, it's best to book tickets in advance for popular activities like the ice rink (from £13.50) or the Ice Bar (from £19.50).

Getting There

Located in the heart of the city at Old Market Square, Winter Wonderland is highly accessible for travelers. If you arrive by train, the walk from Nottingham Railway Station takes only 10–15 minutes. You can also use the NET tram network, which stops right at the square.

For those traveling from other cities, the train journey from London takes about 1.5 hours, and from Manchester about 2 hours. If you are arriving by plane, there are regular buses from East Midlands Airport, with a travel time of approximately 45 minutes. GPS coordinates: 52.9533159, -1.1503211.

During the festive period, parking in the city center is very limited, so guests are encouraged to use the Park & Ride system or taxi services. It can get particularly crowded on weekend evenings, so plan your arrival time in advance.

History & Facts

Nottingham Winter Wonderland is a relatively young but already iconic tradition. It originated as part of a UK-wide trend for European-style Christmas markets. Since the early 2020s, the organizers from Mellors Group have updated the program annually, adding innovative elements such as suspended ice paths to make the festival one of the most recognizable in the country.

The location was not chosen by chance: Old Market Square is the city's historic core with medieval roots. Trade has flourished here for centuries, and the modern market in a sense continues this ancient tradition, combining a historical setting with modern entertainment. The square's architecture provides the perfect backdrop for festive decorations.

Interestingly, the festival is constantly evolving. Each year, the theme of the Ice Bar changes, featuring new ice sculptures created by master ice carvers. The 2026 season is expected to maintain its scale, continuing to delight residents and visitors with its modern interpretation of a Victorian Christmas atmosphere.

Time Needed

To leisurely enjoy all the charms of the holiday, it usually takes between 2 to 4 hours. This is plenty of time to take a lap on the ice, pick out souvenirs at the market, and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate or mulled wine in one of the cozy bars.

If you plan to visit the Ice Bar or take children to family attractions like the Helter Skelter, it's better to allow half a day (up to 5 hours) for your visit. The evening hours are the most atmospheric due to the lighting, but queues for popular attractions can be longer at this time.

Working Hours

Traditionally, the festival opens its doors in mid-November and runs until the end of December. In 2025, the venue welcomed guests daily from 11:00 to 23:00, with the ice rink starting slightly earlier at 10:00. The Christmas market usually closes earlier than the bars: around 18:00 on weekdays and up to 20:00 on weekends.

Please note that Winter Wonderland is closed on December 25th. To plan your 2026 trip, we strongly recommend checking the official event website, as the exact schedule for skating sessions and market stall hours may be adjusted by the organizers.

Nearby

A visit to the festive square can easily be combined with a stroll through the city's key historical sites. The central location allows you to see both medieval monuments and modern cultural sites in a short amount of time.
