History & Facts

The building housing the Ilchester Arms today was constructed in the late 18th century. It received its first license as a drinking establishment in 1786 under the name The George Tavern. This pub was known as one of the favorite haunts of the writer Llewelyn Powys, who found inspiration and peace here.

At the end of the 19th century, the establishment's purpose unexpectedly changed: for nearly thirty years, it served as a drapery and clothing store. However, after a major fire in 1925 destroyed the stock, the building was restored and reopened as the Ivelchester hotel. The establishment only received its current name in 1995.

A special page of its history is linked to gastronomy. Between 1962 and 1985, when the hotel was owned by Ken Seaton, experiments were conducted in its cellars to create the famous Ilchester Cheese. The unique combination of cheddar, beer, and spices led to the founding of the Norseland company, whose products are now known far beyond the borders of Somerset.

Time Needed

If your goal is simply to drop by the pub to enjoy a glass of traditional ale or have lunch in the bistro, you should set aside 1 to 3 hours. This is plenty of time to soak up the historic atmosphere and appreciate the skill of the local chefs.

For travelers wishing to explore the surroundings of Yeovilton and Somerset in more detail, the Ilchester Arms offers the option to stay for one or more nights. Staying in a historic building with modern comforts will allow you to take your time visiting all the nearby cultural monuments and museums.
