History & Facts

The history of this place began in the early 20th century when Jacob W. Wilbur, an ambitious real estate developer from Massachusetts, purchased 64 acres of land, calling it "the most beautiful spot in the state." He dreamed of creating a winter retreat from the harsh Boston winters, and soon his vision came to life as the cozy settlement of Wilbur-by-the-Sea.

The center of local social life for a long time was the luxurious 50-room Toronita Hotel, built in the 1910s. Residents and guests gathered here for formal dinners, tea ceremonies, and card games, while during the day, they preferred playing tennis or croquet in the fresh ocean air.

The community has always been close-knit: in the middle of the last century, residents even rejected a proposal to officially merge with a neighboring city, preferring to maintain their unique autonomy. Even today, a walk along the wide, shell-paved roads of the area allows you to feel the unmistakable charm of Florida's bygone era.

Time Needed

For a quick look at the shoreline and a short walk through the dunes, 1–2 hours will be quite enough. However, to truly experience the atmosphere of serenity and have time for a swim in the Atlantic Ocean, it is better to plan for a half-day visit.

If you plan to have a picnic or engage in birdwatching on the Halifax River, you can easily spend 6–8 enjoyable hours here. Wilbur Beach is a place where time seems to slow down, so you won't want to rush away.

Working Hours

As a natural area and public space, Wilbur Beach is formally open 24/7 and can be visited at any time. Nevertheless, for a comfortable and safe experience, visitors are recommended to plan their visit during daylight hours.

There are no officially set working hours, and access to the territory remains free. Before your trip, it is advisable to check the coastal visiting rules on the city's website to stay informed about current recommendations.
