For several years, the island remained in its natural state until the local community took the initiative in 1963. Citizens and veterans joined forces to raise funds and landscape the area: that was when the 60 royal palms were planted, each becoming a living monument to a specific county resident who gave their life for their country. At that time, the first monument with the inscription "Lest We Forget" was also installed.

The site officially received its current name, Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary, in 2004.
