What to Do

The main highlight here is exploring the vast halls housing the permanent collections. Visitors can spend time admiring intricate studio glass works, large-scale sculptures, and unique photography. Special attention should be paid to the rotating temporary exhibitions, which bring world-class masterpieces to the museum, often becoming sensations in the art community.

For those who want to dive deeper into the context of the works, docent-led tours are available. Families with children will appreciate the interactive programs and theatrical performances that make art accessible and engaging for the youngest viewers. And if what you see inspires you, you can stop by the Art School, located in a nearby historic building, which hosts workshops for creators of all skill levels.

A visit is best concluded with a stop at the museum store, which features rare art books and designer souvenirs. After touring the galleries, it’s pleasant to walk through the Mizner Park complex itself, soaking in the atmosphere and discussing what you’ve seen at one of the cozy nearby cafes.

Getting There

The easiest way to reach this cultural hub from Fort Lauderdale is by car. A drive north on I-95 takes about 30 minutes: follow the highway to the Yamato Road exit, then turn onto Federal Highway (US-1), which leads directly to the Mizner Park complex. Convenient paid parking is available for visitors.

If you prefer public transportation, you can take the Tri-Rail commuter train. Travel to the Boca Raton station, where a 10–15 minute taxi or ride-share service like Uber or Lyft will take you to the gallery doors. Local Palm Tran buses also stop nearby, making the site accessible even without a private vehicle.

For those already in downtown Boca Raton, the museum is easily accessible on foot. Its location, surrounded by popular cafes and shops, makes it easy to integrate a dose of art into your weekend plans.

History & Facts

The museum owes its existence to the initiative of local residents. In the late 1940s, a group of active women, including philanthropist Hildegard Schine and socialite Roberta MacSpadden, organized a small library and art exhibition that attracted a huge number of visitors. This success led to the 1950 creation of the Art Guild of Boca Raton—the organization that became the museum's foundation.

The Guild opened its first dedicated building in 1962 on Palmetto Park Road. Over time, the organization transformed: in 1973, it became a non-profit Art Center, and in 1985, it officially gained status as an art museum. With the appointment of the first full-time director in the late '70s, the collection began to grow rapidly with significant works of art, necessitating new exhibition spaces.

The modern era began in 2001 with the opening of the magnificent building in the heart of Mizner Park. The project, spanning over 4,000 square meters, was designed by the renowned architect Moshe Safdie. Today, the museum is an accredited member of the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) and remains an important symbol of cultural continuity, sustained by the efforts of patrons and artists.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the main galleries and get acquainted with the permanent collection, a typical visitor will need about 2–3 hours. This is enough time to appreciate the paintings as well as the unique glass exhibits and sculptures.
