History & Facts

The history of this place began in 1903 when William H. Cauley purchased 10 acres of land along the Florida East Coast Railway. Henry Flagler’s railroad was of strategic importance, and Cauley built a warehouse and packing house here to ship agricultural products—especially the famous local tomatoes—to the northern states. A village quickly grew around the business, featuring worker housing and saloons, becoming a bustling center of local life.

The village's golden age was interrupted by the massive 1926 hurricane, which destroyed part of the infrastructure and led to regional economic decline. During the Great Depression, the buildings fell into disrepair and were deemed uninhabitable. Revival only began in 1949 when Mary Anne Ballard bought the site and spent decades restoring the cottages, eventually opening the Tea Room in 1979, which remains the heart of the complex today.

The village’s fate was again threatened in 1992 by the devastating Hurricane Andrew, which caused over $1 million in damage. However, thanks to the efforts of new owners, including Frances Varela who purchased the property in 2001, the village was fully restored. Today, guests can enjoy 25 historic buildings and lush gardens. Since 1994, Cauley Square Historic Village has been officially recognized as a Miami-Dade County historic site, preserving South Florida’s unique heritage for future generations.
