History & Facts

The history of Eucalyptus Park is closely tied to the era of California's active development. The first eucalyptus trees appeared here in 1880 thanks to Charles S. Crosby. This early settler brought seeds from Australia, hoping to use the durable wood for railroad ties.

While the plan for railroad ties wasn't fully realized, Crosby transplanted some of the saplings into a cozy picnic area known as "The Grove." These very plantings became the historical and natural heart of the modern park. In 1929, local businessman Walter S. Lieber donated this land to San Diego County, wishing to preserve the spot for the inspiration and recreation of future generations.

The official opening of the public space took place on July 4, 1930. The celebration was grand: residents marked the occasion with a parade, sporting games, a circus performance, and a spectacular firework display, establishing a tradition of using the park as the city's main festive venue.

Time Needed

When planning your visit to Eucalyptus Park, consider your goals. For a leisurely stroll to see the famous trees and a short rest on a bench, 1–1.5 hours is quite sufficient. This time is enough to walk the main paths and enjoy the fresh air.

If your goal is to have a full family picnic with a BBQ or to let the children play to their heart's content on the playgrounds, it is better to set aside 2 to 3 hours. The park's calm atmosphere invites you to take your time and spend an afternoon in the fresh air.

Working Hours

Eucalyptus Park maintains a consistent schedule, welcoming visitors daily. The gates open early in the morning at 6:00 AM and close as evening falls at 6:00 PM. This schedule applies from Monday to Sunday without exception.

Despite the set daily hours, it is recommended to check the official city services website before visiting on holidays, as hours may be adjusted for citywide events.
