Klamath Ranger Station

Klamath Ranger Station is a unique historic complex and an active administrative center located in southern Oregon, USA. The station is part of the Fremont-Winema National Forest and is situated in close proximity to the scenic Lake of the Woods, approximately 53 km from the city of Klamath Falls.

For those traveling from the city of Medford, the route also follows OR-140 but in an easterly direction, with a distance of about 69 kilometers. You can use a rental car or order a taxi from Klamath Falls. There is a convenient parking area for visitors near the station itself.

The history of this place began in the late 19th century when the Cascade Forest Reserve was created in 1898. Over the years, the territory developed: in the 1920s, the first public campground was opened here, which immediately became popular with nature lovers. Interestingly, a modest trapper's log cabin originally stood on the site of the modern station.

The current appearance of the complex took shape in the mid-1930s thanks to the efforts of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Between 1937 and 1939, eight key buildings were constructed based on designs by the Pacific Northwest regional architectural group. All were built in the Cascadian Rustic style, which emphasizes natural materials and a harmonious blending of buildings with the surrounding landscape.

Despite the fact that many such isolated stations were closed after World War II, the site at Lake of the Woods was preserved. In 1986, the complex was included in the National Register of Historic Places as an outstanding example of early Forest Service architecture. Today, it is not only a working center but also a valuable open-air historical exhibit.

For a quick tour of the historic buildings and a visit to the visitor center, 1–2 hours is usually sufficient. During this time, you will have enough time to get acquainted with the architectural features of the rustic style and obtain necessary tourist information from the rangers.

However, if you plan a full day of relaxation at Lake of the Woods, including fishing, a picnic, or a hike on the trails, it is worth setting aside a full day for the trip. The local landscapes are perfect for leisurely contemplation and extended time in the fresh air.

The station's administrative offices are generally open to visitors from Monday to Friday, approximately from 07:45 to 16:30. Note that the station is closed to the public on Saturday and Sunday.
