What to Do

The main magnet for guests at Crystal Ridge is undoubtedly winter sports. It provides ideal conditions for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels. Beginners can take advantage of specialized learning zones, while more experienced athletes will appreciate the high-speed rope tow—a specialized lift that allows for an endless number of runs in the terrain park without long waits.

If you are looking for something a bit less extreme, be sure to try snow tubing. This fun and safe activity is perfect for families with children: you simply hop into an inflatable tube and slide down specially prepared lanes. The resort is also a key venue for school and club ski racing, so the atmosphere is often buzzing with exciting competitions during the winter.

Beyond activities on the slope, you can simply enjoy the atmosphere at Crystal Ridge in the renovated lodge. This cozy space is suitable for private events, weddings, or corporate parties. Even in the summer, the area remains active: its integration into the Ballpark Commons complex allows guests to participate in various sporting events and outdoor activities throughout the year.

History & Facts

The history of Crystal Ridge began in 1987, thanks to the initiative of John Kaishian. The most remarkable fact is that this hill is man-made: Kaishian used construction fill to artificially increase the elevation of the area. His primary goal was to create an accessible space where urban youth could engage in physical activity and learn to downhill ski.

In 2012, the resort was acquired by Mike Zimmerman and ROC Ventures. The new owners performed a massive renovation, renaming the facility The Rock Snowpark. They integrated the ski slope into a larger sports and entertainment cluster called the Rock Sports Complex, now known as Ballpark Commons. These changes breathed new life into the area, transforming it into a multi-functional recreation center.

The next important chapter began in 2017 when the management of the snow operations was taken over by Rick and Mike Schmitz, experienced operators of other Wisconsin ski centers. Finally, on August 14, 2024, the resort officially returned to its historical name—Crystal Ridge. Along with the original name came a new modern branding that pays tribute to the region's winter traditions.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy your time at Crystal Ridge, most visitors need between 3 and 5 hours. This is enough time for several energetic runs on skis or a snowboard, as well as some fun in the snow tubing area. If you plan to take lessons from an instructor, you should budget an extra hour in your schedule.

If your goal is to participate in sports races or attend a formal event at the local lodge, your stay might extend to a full day. In any case, the convenient proximity to the city makes it easy to plan both a quick spontaneous trip after work or a full weekend with the family.
