General Weather Overview

The climate in Omaha is characterised as continental, with four distinct seasons. The city experiences significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year, which is typical for the central part of the United States. Winters here are cold, whilst summers are hot and quite humid.

The winter months, from December to February, bring negative average temperatures, sometimes dropping to -8°C. Summer, especially July and August, delights with warmth, featuring average temperatures around 24-25°C and maximum values reaching 30°C. Spring and autumn are transitional seasons with moderate temperatures. Rainfall is distributed relatively evenly throughout the year, with a slight peak in May, when the highest number of rainy days is observed.

Temperature

The climate in Omaha is distinguished by pronounced seasonal contrasts. The coldest months are traditionally January, with an average temperature of -3.7°C (minimum -8.0°C, maximum 0.6°C), and February, where the average temperature is -2.3°C. During these months, night-time temperatures consistently drop well below freezing. The hottest period falls in July, when the average temperature reaches 25.4°C, and daytime highs regularly rise to 30.4°C. June and August are also characterised by high temperatures, with average values of 24.4°C and 24.3°C respectively.

Summer in Omaha, spanning June, July, and August, brings hot weather. Daytime temperatures often exceed 29°C, while nights remain quite warm, dropping on average to 19-20°C. The winter period, from December to February, is conversely quite frosty. Average daytime temperatures hover around zero or slightly above, as seen in December (average maximum 4.4°C), while night-time temperatures confidently dip into the negatives, reaching -4.5°C in December and down to -8.0°C in January. A characteristic feature of Omaha's climate is the noticeable diurnal temperature variation throughout the year. The difference between daytime highs and night-time lows often amounts to 10-13°C, which is particularly perceptible in transitional seasons such as April (difference between average maximum 17.6°C and average minimum 4.9°C) and October.

Precipitation

In Omaha, a distinct seasonality is observed in the distribution of precipitation throughout the year. The greatest amount of precipitation falls in late spring and early summer. May stands out as the wettest month: on average, 5 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of days with precipitation reaches 15. June is also characterised by significant humidity, bringing about 4 mm of precipitation and approximately 10 rainy days. Conversely, the winter months — January, February, November, and December — are the driest in terms of total precipitation, with a figure of just 1 mm each. December is distinguished by the lowest number of days with precipitation – only 4 days.

The nature of precipitation in Omaha changes depending on the season. During the winter period, especially from December to February, when average temperatures drop significantly below freezing (for example, in January the average temperature is -3.7°C, and in February -2.3°C), precipitation mainly falls as snow. In transitional months, such as March (average temperature 5.7°C, minimum 0.1°C) and November (average temperature 5.7°C, minimum 0.7°C), both rain and snowfall are possible, especially when night-time temperatures drop. During the warm season, from April to October, when temperatures are consistently positive, precipitation falls in the form of rain.

The frequency of precipitation in Omaha reaches its peak in May, when almost half the month, that is about 15 days, may be accompanied by precipitation. Spring months, such as March and April, are also quite wet, counting 9 days with precipitation each. In summer, the number of days with precipitation decreases slightly: in June there are about 10, in July – 8, and in August – 9. In autumn, a gradual decrease in the frequency of precipitation is observed: 8 days are recorded in September, 7 in October, and in November – already 5 days with precipitation, which foreshadows a drier winter period.

What to Pack

Winters in Omaha (December-February) require serious preparation for the cold. The average temperature often drops below freezing, and minimum values can reach -8°C. Your suitcase must include: a warm winter jacket (down jacket), a hat, a scarf, gloves, and clothes that can be worn in layers, including thermal underwear. Although there is little precipitation (about 1 mm per month), be prepared for 4-6 days with snow or wet snow – waterproof warm shoes will be indispensable.

The summer months in Omaha (June-August) are a time of warmth and sun, with average temperatures of 24-25°C and daytime peaks up to 30°C. Pack light, breathable clothing: T-shirts, shorts, dresses. Do not forget sunscreen with high SPF, a hat for sun protection, and sunglasses. Summer here is quite dry (2-4 mm of precipitation), but approximately 8-10 days per month can be rainy, so a light jacket or an umbrella will come in handy, especially for evening activities.

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) in Omaha are characterised by changeable weather and significant temperature fluctuations – from 5-6°C at the beginning/end of the seasons to a comfortable 18-22°C in May and September. May can be particularly rainy (up to 5 mm of precipitation and 15 days with rain). The main rule for these periods is layering. Combine light items with sweaters, fleece jumpers, and a mid-season jacket. An umbrella or raincoat will become your reliable companions. And remember that for exploring Omaha at any time of the year, comfortable shoes are of key importance.
